We have some SoCon action on Saturday’s college basketball schedule, as the East Tennessee State Buccaneers take on the VMI Keydets.
The East Tennessee State Buccaneers will be looking to add to their current 15 game winning streak to also stay perfect in conference play following an 81-61 win over Chattanooga in their last outing. Desonta Bradford led ETSU with 22 points on 10 of 16 shooting, while Peter Jurkin added 16 points along with 13 rebounds for the double-double. Jalan McCloud added 15 points on 6 of 7 shooting with a pair of threes while David Burrell added 14 points to round out the scoring in double figures for the Buccaneers in the win. Bradford leads East Tennessee State with an average of 15.5 points and 5.8 rebounds per game, while McCloud leads the Buccaneers in assists with 3.6 assists per game this season. As a team, East Tennessee State is scoring 77.7 points per game on 48.3% shooting from the field, 35.4% from behind the arc and 71.5% from the foul line this season.
The VMI Keydets will look for a big win to get out of the basement in the SoCon standings after losing 11 of their last 13 games following a 72-60 loss to Western Carolina in their last outing. Austin Vereen and Jordan Ratliffe tied for the team-high with 13 points, with Vereen adding 10 rebounds and 3 steals for the double-double, while Bubba Parham shot just 5 of 21 from the floor, including 1 of 10 from behind the arc, for 12 points to round out the trio of double digit scorers for VMI in the loss. Parham leads the Keydets with an average of 14.9 points per game, while Keith Smith leads VMI with 3.5 assists per game and Tyler Creammer is VMI’s top rebounder with 5.7 rebounds per game this season. As a team, VMI is scoring 64.8 points per game on 40.5% shooting from the field, 32.9% from behind the arc and 73.9% from the foul line this season.
East Tennessee State is 8-1-1 ATS in their last 10 road games and 11-3-1 ATS in their last 15 conference matchups while the under is 5-1 in their last 6 games against a team with a losing record. VMI is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games overall and 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games against a team with a winning record while the under is 22-8 in their last 30 home games. East Tennessee State is 4-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings between these two teams.
Laying a big number like this on the road is scary because home court usually plays a big part in any game. However, East Tennessee State is the team to beat in the SoCon and VMI hasn’t put up much of a fight so far this season and I don’t expect it to start now so I’ll lay the points with the Buccaneers here.
