The Furman Paladins and the VMI Keydets meet in SoCon college basketball action from Cameron Hall on Thursday night.

The Furman Paladins will be looking to build on back-to-back wins after a 101-85 win over the Citadel in their last outing. Matt Rafferty led the Paladins with 28 points on 11 of 15 shooting with 12 rebounds and 3 steals for the double-double while Jordan Lyons added 17 points on 6 of 16 shooting with 3 triples. Clay Mounce and Noah Gurley each added 15 points, with Mounce added a team-high 13 rebounds with a pair of blocks for the double-double while Gurley shot 6 of 11 with 8 rebounds. Alex Hunter added 13 points to round out the group of double-digit scorers for Furman in the win, while Tre Clark added 6 points, 9 rebounds and 4 steals. Rafferty leads Furman with an average of 17.6 points, 9.2 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game this season. As a team, Furman is averaging 80.6 points per game on 47.1% shooting from the field, 35.3% from behind the arc and 66.9% from the foul line this season.

The VMI Keydets will look to rebound from back-to-back losses following a 71-68 loss to UNC-Greensboro gave the Keydets 7 losses in their last 8 games. Bubba Parham led the Keydets with 17 points on 6 of 12 shooting with a team-high 5 assists while Garrett Gilkeson and Sarju Patel each had 14 points to finish off the trio of double-digit scorers for VMI in the loss with Gilkeson adding 3 threes and a team-high 8 rebounds while Patel added a 7 of 7 mark from the foul line. Parham leads VMI with an average of 21.9 points and 3.3 assists per game while Tyler Creammer leads the Keydets on the glass with 6.9 rebounds per game this season. As a team, VMI is averaging 75.5 points per game on 41.6% shooting from the field, 34.7% from behind the arc and 74.7% from the foul line this season.

Furman is 21-6 ATS in their last 27 games against a team with a losing record and 9-3 ATS in their last 12 conference games while the under is 6-2 in their last 8 road games. VMI is 3-8-1 ATS in their last 12 games against a team with a winning record and 3-9-1 ATS in their last 13 conference games while the over is 5-1 in their last 6 games overall. Furman is 6-0 ATS in the last 6 meetings between these two teams and the favorite is 8-0 ATS in the last 8 meetings between these two teams.

Furman has been the team to beat in the SoCon this year and I don’t see that changing against a VMI team that the Paladins have had their way with in recent years. Furman has not only covered in the last 6 meetings, but they’ve won each by at least 12 points, by an average of 22.8 points per game over that stretch. I just can’t see VMI keeping up here, so I’ll lay the points with the better team in this spot and that’s Furman.
