SoCon college basketball brings us a bout between the Furman Paladins and the VMI Keydets.
The Furman Paladins have been tabbed as one of the top teams in the SoCon and their 9-4 record built on solid performances at both ends of the floor says this team is on track. Furman comes in off of a 66-61 defeat at the Tennessee Volunteers as a 16 point underdog. The Paladins held a small 39.7%-37.1% shooting edge but the Volunteers pulled out the win with seven more free throws.
Devin Sibley carried the Furman offense with a contest high 22 points seven rebounds and two assists on 10-16 from the floor. The Paladins received nine points from Geoff Beans on 2-7 shooting while Matt Rafferty chipped in with seven points, four pulls and five assists on 2-5 from the field.
The VMI Keydets look like a team that could be a problem for the competition in the SoCon on any given day. We saw that last time out in a 75-65 road loss to the VCU Rams as a 20 point underdog where the team fell behind 39-21 at the half but would not go away despite being outshot 47.4%-35.5%.
The Keydets didn’t have a go to scorer with Garrett Gikeson being the lone double digit scorer at 12 points, three yanks and three assists on 4-8 from the floor. Austin Vereen and Bubba Parham gave VMI nine points apiece and a combined nine rebounds while Keith Smith chipped in with eight points, four pulls and four helpers.
Over is 19-7 in Furman last 26 road games and over is 8-3 in Furman last 11 Saturday games and Furman are 10-4 ATS in their last 14 vs. Southern. Under is 11-1 in VMI last 12 vs. Southern and under is 14-2 in VMI last 16 overall.
Furman is one of the better teams in the Southern and if they can control the pace I like their chances….
