|Date & Time||Thursday February 28, 2019, 7:00 PM (EST)|
Mercer Bears -5 -- O/U: 153
The Mercer Bears and the VMI Keydets meet in SoCon college basketball action from the Cameron Hall on Thursday night.
The Mercer Bears will look to build on back-to-back wins after a 74-69 win over Chattanooga in their last outing. Ross Cummings led the Bears with 37 points on 12 of 22 shooting with 8 threes as the only Mercer player to score in double figures in the winning effort while Fardaws Almaq chipped in 9 points with 11 rebounds and Ethan Stair had 9 points with 7 boards. Daniel Love added a team-high 5 assists as well in the victory for Mercer. Cummings leads Mercer in scoring with 17.9 points per game while Almaq leads the Bears on the glass with 5.5 rebounds per game and Marcus Cohen leads Mercer in assists with 3.7 helpers per game this season. As a team, Mercer is averaging 73.4 points per game on 45.1% shooting from the field, 34.3% from behind the arc and 70.1% from the foul line this season.
The VMI Keydets will look to build on an 83-78 win over Wetern Carolina in their last outing. Bubba Parham led the Keydets with 38 points on 13 of 26 shooting with 4 threes and an 8 of 11 mark from the foul line. Myles Lewis and Garrett Gilkeson each had 15 points with Gilkeson shooting 4 of 8 with 3 threes while Lewis shot 6 of 14 with a team-high 12 rebounds to round out the trio of double-digit scorers for VMU in the win. Parham leads VMU with an average of 20.6 points and 3.3 assists per game while Gilkeson leads the Keydets in rebounding with 6.2 rebounds per game this season. As a team, VMI is averaging 75 points per game on 42.4% shooting from the field, 35.1% from behind the 3-point line and 71.7% from the foul line this season.
Mercer is 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games overall and 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games against a team with a losing record while the over is 5-1 in their last 6 road games. VMI is 5-12 ATS in their last 17 Thursday games and 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games against a team with a losing record while the over is 5-0 in their last 5 conference games. Mercer is 4-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings between these two teams.
Mercer has enjoyed a lot of success in this matchup, but the issue is that Mercer hasn’t been that good of a road team to warrant being a favorite, even against the team in the conference basement like VMI is. The Bears are just 2-11 SU on the road this season, and have had issues ATS over the last couple of weeks now. VMI is destined for an early exit in the SoCon tournament, but the Keydets are a better team at home than Mercer is on the road, so I’ll take a shot with VMI and the points in this one.
