The East Tennessee State Buccaneers and the Western Carolina Catamounts meet in SoCon college basketball action from the Ramsey Center on Saturday night.
The East Tennessee State Buccaneers come into this game looking to rebound after having their 8-game winning streak snapped after a 75-68 loss to UNC-Greensboro in their last outing. Tray Boyd led the Buccaneers with 17 points on 6 of 10 shooting with 5 threes in just 19 minutes while Jeromy Rodriguez added 16 points on 7 of 13 shooting with 14 rebounds for the double-double as the only other East Tennessee State player to finish in double figures scoring in the losing effort. Boyd III leads the Buccaneers in scoring with 12.4 points per game while Rodriguez leads ETSU in rebounding by averaging a double-double per game with 11.6 points and a team-high 12 rebounds per game. As a team, East Tennessee State is scoring 80 points per game on 48.5% shooting from the field, 35.6% from behind the arc and 66.9% from the foul line this season.
The Western Carolina Catamounts will look to rebound from back-to-back losses after a 93-81 loss to VMI last time out. Onno Steger led the Catamounts with 27 points on 9 of 15 shooting with a team-high 9 rebounds and 4 assists while Matt Halvorsen added 23 points on 7 of 9 shooting with 6 threes. Kameron Gibson added 20 points on 8 of 18 shooting with 3 threes of his own along with 3 assists to round out the trio of double-digit scorers for Western Carolina in the losing effort. Carlos Dotson missed the game against VMI but still leads the Catamounts with an average of 13.2 points and 9.6 rebounds per game while Halvorsen leads Western Carolina in assists with 2.6 assists per game this season. As a team, Western Carolina is averaging 70 points per game on 45.9% shooting from the field, 35.8% from behind the 3-point line and 62.9% from the foul line this season.
East Tennessee State is 15-6-2 ATS in their last 23 road games and 13-6 ATS in their last 19 games overall while the under is 4-0 in their last 4 games against a team with a losing record. Western Carolina is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall and 6-2 ATS in their last 8 home games while the under is 4-0 in their last 4 games against a team with winning record. East Tennessee State is 5-2 ATS in the last 7 meetings between these two teams at Western Carolina.
I haven’t had a ton of luck with road favorites as of late, but this feels like the kind of game that I can capitalize on. East Tennessee State is still one of the best that the SoCon has to offer, despite the resurgence of teams like Wofford, Furman and UNC-Greensboro, while Western Carolina is prime for yet another season in the basement of the conference. The Buccaneers have won 9 of the last 10 meetings between the two, including the last 4 meetings by double-digits, with an average margin of victory of 16.2 points per game over that span. I just think these are two teams on completely different levels right now, so I’ll lay the points with East Tennessee State in this one.
