The South Dakota State Jackrabbits will travel to Western Hall to take on the Western Illinois Leathernecks this Friday night in College Basketball action.

The South Dakota State Jackrabbits dropped to 10-5 on the season after being defeated by the Montana Grizzlies, 85-74, this past Saturday. South Dakota State had no answers on the defensive end for the Grizzlies and couldn’t fight back after Montana took a 59-48 lead midway through the 2nd half. South Dakota State allowed Montana to shoot 47.5% from the field and 39.3% from beyond the arc in the loss. Leading the way for the Jackrabbits was Mike Daum who had a double-double with 33 points, 15 rebounds, 2 assists, and a block.

On the season, South Dakota State is averaging 84.7 ppg on 50.3% shooting from the field. The Jackrabbits are averaging 9.5 three-pointers per game on 42.4% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, South Dakota State has been led by Mike Daum (25.3 ppg, 10.9 rpg, 1.9 apg), David Jenkins (19.8 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 1.4 apg), Skyler Flatten (15.6 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 1.5 apg), and Tevin King (8.9 ppg, 6.9 rpg, 4.5 apg, 1.3 spg).

Defensively, South Dakota State is allowing their opponents to average 72.0 ppg on 39.8% shooting from the field. The Jackrabbits have a rebound margin of 6.1 and a turnover margin of -1.3.

The Western Illinois Leathernecks snapped their 4-game losing streak and improved to 5-8 on the season after defeating the Chicago State Cougars, 81-52, on December 20th. Western Illinois dominated Chicago State on both ends of the court and had little trouble securing the victory after taking a 41-17 halftime lead. Western Illinois shot 50.9% from the field while holding the Cougars to 35.0% shooting from the field and 29.4% from beyond the arc. Leading the way for the Leathernecks was Brandon Gilbeck who had a double-double with 12 points, 14 rebounds, 6 blocks, and a steal.

On the season, Western Illinois is averaging 73.8 ppg on 44.6% shooting from the field. The Leathernecks are averaging 8.4 three-pointers per game on 39.1% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Western Illinois has been led by Kobe Webster (18.2 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 3.5 apg, 1.2 spg), Isaac Johnson (12.7 ppg, 6.2 rpg, 1.6 apg), C.J. Duff (10.8 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 1.5 apg, 1.1 spg), and Brandon Gilbeck (8.8 ppg, 8.5 rpg, 1.2 spg).

Defensively, Western Illinois is allowing their opponents to an average of 70.1 ppg on 40.8% shooting from the field. The Leathernecks have a rebound margin of 0.2 and a turnover margin of -0.8.

The Jackrabbits are 21-7 ATS in their last 28 games vs. Summit League opponents and 37-18 ATS in their last 55 games overall. The Leathernecks are 7-18-2 ATS in their last 27 games following an ATS win and just 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games overall.

South Dakota State might have dropped 2 of their last 3 games, however, this is still a very solid basketball team that should be one of the favorites heading into Summit League play. South Dakota State has an explosive offense that ranks 16th in scoring offense & 6th in 3P-FG% and has one of the best players in the country in Mike Daum. Western Illinois has struggled a bit offensively as the rank just 194th in scoring offense and although they are 4-1 at home this season, the competition has been pretty weak. South Dakota State has a bunch of weapons on the offensive end and as I just don’t see the Leathernecks being able to keep up with the Jackrabbits on the offense end, I’m taking South Dakota State to cover this mid-range road spread.

South Dakota State Jackrabbits -7
