The South Dakota State Jackrabbits dropped to 10-5 on the season after being defeated by the Montana Grizzlies, 85-74, this past Saturday. South Dakota State had no answers on the defensive end for the Grizzlies and couldn’t fight back after Montana took a 59-48 lead midway through the 2nd half. South Dakota State allowed Montana to shoot 47.5% from the field and 39.3% from beyond the arc in the loss. Leading the way for the Jackrabbits was Mike Daum who had a double-double with 33 points, 15 rebounds, 2 assists, and a block.

The Western Illinois Leathernecks snapped their 4-game losing streak and improved to 5-8 on the season after defeating the Chicago State Cougars, 81-52, on December 20th. Western Illinois dominated Chicago State on both ends of the court and had little trouble securing the victory after taking a 41-17 halftime lead. Western Illinois shot 50.9% from the field while holding the Cougars to 35.0% shooting from the field and 29.4% from beyond the arc. Leading the way for the Leathernecks was Brandon Gilbeck who had a double-double with 12 points, 14 rebounds, 6 blocks, and a steal.

The Jackrabbits are 21-7 ATS in their last 28 games vs. Summit League opponents and 37-18 ATS in their last 55 games overall. The Leathernecks are 7-18-2 ATS in their last 27 games following an ATS win and just 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games overall.
South Dakota State might have dropped 2 of their last 3 games, however, this is still a very solid basketball team that should be one of the favorites heading into Summit League play. South Dakota State has an explosive offense that ranks 16th in scoring offense & 6th in 3P-FG% and has one of the best players in the country in Mike Daum. Western Illinois has struggled a bit offensively as the rank just 194th in scoring offense and although they are 4-1 at home this season, the competition has been pretty weak. South Dakota State has a bunch of weapons on the offensive end and as I just don’t see the Leathernecks being able to keep up with the Jackrabbits on the offense end, I’m taking South Dakota State to cover this mid-range road spread.
