We have some C-USA action on the hardwood Saturday night as the FIU Panthers take on the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers in a college basketball matchup.
The FIU Panthers will be looking to find some measure of consistency after splitting their last 6 games, including a 76-66 loss to Marshall in their last outing. Trejon Jacob led the Panthers with 16 points along with a team-high 8 rebounds, while Josh Stamps came 2nd with 15 points along with 4 steals. Eric Lockett added 12 points with 7 rebounds and a team-high 4 assists while Brian Beard Jr. added 11 points to round out the scoring in double figures for the Panthers in the loss. Beard Jr. leads FIU with an average of 16.2 points and 5.5 assists per game while Lockett is the Panthers’ top rebounder with 6.3 boards per game this season. As a team, FIU is scoring 70.7 points per game on 42.4% shooting from the field, 32.9% from behind the arc and 58.4% from the foul line this season.
The Western Kentucky Hilltoppers will look to keep things going after winning 10 of their last 12 games following a 75-63 win over FAU in their last outing. Taveion Hollingsworth led the Hilltoppers with 20 points on 8 of 12 shooting while Dwight Coleby came 2nd with 15 points along with 8 rebounds and Justin Johnson added 12 points with a team-high 9 rebounds to round out the scoring in double figures for WKU in the win. Darius Thompson added 9 points and a share of the team-high with 3 assists but still leads Western Kentucky with an average of 14.2 points and 4.7 assists per game while Johnson leads the Hilltoppers in rebounding with 9.6 rebounds per game this season. As a team, Western Kentucky is scoring 77.3 points per game on 48.7% shooting from the field, 36% from behind the arc and 69.1% from the foul line this season.
FIU is 5-1 ATS in their last 6 road games and 15-5-1 ATS in their last 21 games overall while the over is 13-6-1 in their last 20 games following a loss. Western Kentucky is 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games following a game where they failed to cover the spread and 6-2 ATS in their last 8 home games against a team with a losing road record while the under is 6-0-1 in their last 7 games overall. The favorite is 6-2 ATS in the last 8 meetings between these two teams.
The favorite has had the majority of the success when these two lock horns, however I feel that as good as Western Kentucky is, that FIU deserves a little bit more credit than to be this big of an underdog. The Panthers have been playing well ATS in their own right as of late, and have a better record ATS on the road than the Hilltoppers do at home. I’m not saying FlU wins this outright but they can keep it to an 8-9 point game, so I’ll take the points with FIU here.
