The Line: Western Michigan Broncos -12.5 -- Over/Under: 153
The Detroit Mercy Titans and Western Michigan Broncos meet Tuesday in college basketball action at the University Arena.
The Detroit Mercy Titans are coming off an eight win season that ended with a first round exit in the Horizon Tournament. While Detroit Mercy lost its top two players from last season, Josh McFolley does return after averaging 11.1 points and 2.2 rebounds, and he shot 34.2 percent from beyond the arc. Cole Long averaged 16.7 minutes in 32 games and Gerald Blackshear Jr. averaged almost three rebounds in very little playing time. The Detroit Mercy Titans are a very young and unproven roster, so I’m not sure many expect much of a leap from a year ago. However, McFolley is an explosive senior guard who has produced the last three years, so he could be enough to make the Titans competitive. The Detroit Mercy Titans lost five of their last six road games.
The Western Michigan Broncos won 17 games last season that ended with a first round exit in the MAC Tournament. Josh Davis will be the leader of this Western Michigan team, as he averaged 10.7 points and 6.3 rebounds on 47.5 percent shooting last season. Bryce Moore averaged 9.8 points and 1.5 assists and Brandon Johnson averaged 9.3 points and 5.8 rebounds. The Western Michigan Broncos are fairly intact from what they were a year ago, which makes me believe they could be a potential sleeper in the MAC this season and end up in some sort of tournament at the end of the year. Western Michigan is a team worth keeping an eye on early in the season. The Western Michigan Broncos have won four of their last six home games.
The Titans are 3-1-1 ATS in their last 5 Tuesday games. The Broncos are 1-7 ATS in their last 8 home games, 0-4 ATS in their last 4 Tuesday games and 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games overall. The Titans are 1-3-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings in Western Michigan, the home team is 3-1-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings and the favorite is 4-0-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings.
The Western Michigan Broncos have the potential to be a real dark horse this season and make some noise in the MAC. The Detroit Mercy Titans are young and unproven, the kind of teams I like to fade until they find themselves and get their feet wet. The chalk is a bit steep, but I have more confidence in Western Michigan heading into the season than I do Detroit. I'll eat it.
