The Delaware Blue Hens and William & Mary Tribe the meet in a CAA tournament quarterfinal matchup in college basketball action from the North Charleston Coliseum on Sunday afternoon.
The Delaware Blue Hens come into the tournament as the #5 seed after finishing the regular season with a 16-15 overall record, including 8-10 in CAA conference play. Delaware had some solid showings in the non-conference portion of their schedule, with a narrow 6-point loss on the road against Maryland as well as a win over Louisiana Tech. The Blue Hens got off to a strong 4-1 start and struggled with consistency, eventually hitting 6-3 before losing 7 of 9 down the stretch to finish under .500 in conference play. Eric Carter led the Blue Hens in scoring and rebounding with 16 points and 9.9 rebounds per game while Ryan Allen came right behind with 15.7 points per game and Ithiel Horton had 12.5 points per game. Kevin Anderson averaged 10.3 points while leading the Blue Hens in assists with 3.7 assists per game this season. As a team, Delaware is averaging 70.7 points per game on 45.6% shooting from the field, 37% from behind the arc and 72.6% from the foul line this season.
The William & Mary Tribe enter the conference tournament as the #4 seed after finishing the year with a 14-16 overall mark, including 10-8 in conference play. The Tribe gave themselves a tall order in the non-conference portion of the schedule, with losses to some bigger names like Notre Dame, Virginia, Old Dominion, Marshall and George Mason. The Tribe started CAA play well, going 3-1 before dropping 5 in a row to fall to 3-6. William & Mary sat at 5-8 before rattling off 5 straight wins to finish the season. Nathan Knight led the Tribe in scoring with 21 points per game while Justin Pierce came 2nd in scoring with 14.4 points per game while also leading the Tribe with 8.9 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game this season. As a team, William & Mary is averaging 74.7 points per game on 47.4% shooting from the field, 34.5% from behind the arc and 66.2% from the foul line this season.
Delaware is 1-9-1 ATS in their last 11 games overall and 1-6-1 ATS in their last 8 games against a team with a losing record while the over is 4-1 in their last 5 neutral site games. William & Mary is 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall and 3-8 ATS in their last 11 games against a team with a winning record while the under is 4-1 in their last 5 games following a win. Delaware is 1-7 ATS in the last 8 meetings between these two teams.
I think the 4-5 matchup is one of the hardest ones to call regardless of the tournament as there usually isn’t that much separating the two teams involved, which is almost the case here. However, William & Mary finished the season strong ATS, while Delaware struggled to find a cover for most of the conference portion of their schedule. Add in the lack of success that the Blue Hens have had in this matchup, and I think you have to lay the points with William & Mary here.
