The Samford Bulldogs will travel to Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium to take on the Wofford Terriers this Thursday night in College Basketball action.
The Samford Bulldogs dropped to 12-8 (2-5 Southern) on the season after being defeated by the Mercer Bears, 93-87, this past Saturday. Samford had no answers on the defensive end against the Bears and couldn’t fight back after Mercer took a 80-71 lead with 1:40 left in regulation. Samford shot 45.5% from the field, however, allowed Mercer to shoot 54.9% from the field and 47.6% from beyond the arc in the loss. Leading the way for the Bulldogs was Josh Sharkey who had a double-double with 27 points, 10 assists, 2 rebounds, and 4 steals.
On the season, Samford is averaging 77.7 ppg on 47.2% shooting from the field. The Bulldogs are averaging 7.8 three-pointers per game on 38.8% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Samford has been led by Josh Sharkey (15.7 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 6.9 apg, 2.8 spg), Ruben Guerrero (14.2 ppg, 8.4 rpg, 2.0 bpg), Brandon Austin (12.9 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 1.0 spg), and Robert Allen (9.6 ppg, 7.3 rpg, 1.9 apg).
Defensively, Samford is allowing their opponents to average 72.5 ppg on 41.0% shooting from the field. The Bulldogs have a rebound margin of 1.5 and a turnover margin of -0.5.
The Wofford Terriers won their 6th straight game and improved to 15-4 (7-0 Southern) on the season after defeating the Furman Paladins, 59-54, this past Saturday. Wofford was outstanding on the defensive end against the Paladins and was able to pull away later after a Storm Murphy three-pointers gave the Terriers a 57-54 lead with :18 seconds left in regulation. Wofford shot just 38.9% from the field, however, held Furman to just 35.1% shooting from the field & 25.9% from beyond the arc in the victory. Leading the way for the Terriers was Fletcher Magee who had 22 points, 1 rebound, 1 assist, and a steal.
On the season, Wofford is averaging 81.8 ppg on 48.6% shooting from the field. The Terriers are averaging 10.2 three-pointers per game on 39.0% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Wofford has been led by Fletcher Magee (17.8 ppg, 2.7 rpg, 1.3 apg), Cameron Jackson (15.0 ppg, 7.6 rpg, 2.2 apg, 1.5 spg, 1.1 bpg), Nathan Hoover (13.6 ppg, 2.6 rpg, 1.1 apg), and Strom Murphy (8.1 ppg, 2.1 rpg, 3.6 apg).
Defensively, Wofford is holding their opponents to an average of 63.8 ppg on 41.8% shooting from the field. The Terriers have a rebound margin of 8.1 and a turnover margin of 3.1.
The Bulldogs are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 road games and 6-1 ATS in their last 7 road games vs. a team with a winning home record. The Terriers are 9-1 ATS in their last 10 games following a ATS loss and 9-4 ATS in their last 13 Thursday games.
Samford has lost 4 of their last 5 games and although they have a solid offensive which ranks 67th in FG% & 21st in 3P-FG%, the Bulldogs have had trouble keeping their opponents off the scoreboard as they currently rank just 213th in scoring defense. Wofford has won 9 of their last 10 games and has been outstanding on both ends of the court as they rank 33rd in scoring offense & 25th in scoring defense.
Wofford is looking like the team to beat in a very tough Southern conference this season, however, this Samford team is better than the team than many people realize as they have a solid win over Jacksonville State and even played a competitive game against Tennessee in an 83-70 loss. Samford is going to have their hands full with Fletcher Magee & Cameron Jackson, however, I think the Bulldogs offense will be able to do enough to cover with this many points.
