Xavier Musketeers -2.5 -- Over/Under: 146
The St. John’s Red Storm will travel to the Cintas Center to take on the Xavier Musketeers this Saturday night in College Basketball action.
The St. John’s Red Storm lost their 2nd straight game and dropped to 20-10 (8-9 Big East) on the season after being defeated by the DePaul Blue Demons, 92-83, this past Sunday. St. John’s led by a 42-33 margin at halftime, however, had no answers for the Blue Demons Max Struss in the 2nd half and couldn’t fight back after DePaul took an 86-77 lead with just :28 seconds left in regulation. St. John’s allowed DePaul to shoot 57.4% from the field and was outrebounded by the Blue Demons by a 37-25 margin. Leading the way for the Red Storm was who had 29 points, 2 rebounds, and an assist.
On the season, St. John’s is averaging 78.5 ppg on 45.8% shooting from the field. The Red Storm are averaging 8.8 three-pointers per game on 36.9% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, St. John’s has been led by Shamorie Ponds (19.8 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 5.0 apg, 2.6 spg), Mustapha Heron (15.1 ppg, 4.8 rpg, 1.4 apg, 1.0 spg), LJ Figueroa (14.4 ppg, 6.3 rpg, 1.9 apg, 1.9 spg), and Justin Simon (9.9 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 3.3 apg, 1.4 spg).
Defensively, St. John’s is allowing their opponents to average 74.2 ppg on 43.0% shooting from the field. The Red Storm have a rebound margin of -5.4 and a turnover margin of 5.0.
The Xavier Musketeers had their 5-game winning streak snapped and dropped to 16-14 (8-9 Big East) on the season after being defeated by the Butler Bulldogs, 84-73, this past Thursday. Xavier gave Butler all they could handle on in a tough road environment, however, the Musketeers offense struggled down the stretch and could fight back after Butler took a 63-57 lead with just 2:53 left in regulation. Xavier shot 44.1% from the field and 30.4% from beyond the arc in the loss. Leading the way for the Musketeers was Zach Hankins who had 12 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 blocks.
On the season, Xavier is averaging 72.0 ppg on 46.9% shooting from the field. The Musketeers are averaging 7.0 three-pointers per game on 33.7% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Xavier has been led by Naji Marshall (14.9 ppg, 6.7 rpg, 3.3 apg, 1.0 spg), Paul Scruggs (11.9 ppg, 4.8 rpg, 3.2 apg, 1.3 spg), Quentin Goodin (11.6 ppg, 2.9 rpg, 4.6 apg, 1.3 spg), and Tyrique Jones (11.4 ppg, 7.8 rpg).
Defensively, Xavier is allowing their opponents to average 71.0 ppg on 43.5% shooting from the field. The Musketeers have a rebound margin of 3.9 and a turnover margin of -2.4.
The Red Storm are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games following an ATS loss, however, are just 1-4-1 ATS in their last 6 Saturday games. The Musketeers are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall and 6-2 ATS in their last 8 home games vs. a team with a winning road record.
St. John’s have lost 4 of their last 7 games and although their offense has been solid as the Red Storm rank 49th in scoring offense, 100th in FG%, and 63rd in 3P-FG%, the Red Storm have had trouble keeping opponents off the scoreboard as they rank just 249th in scoring defense.
Xavier has played much better as of late and come into this game ranked 194th in scoring offense, 56th in FG%, and 170th in scoring defense.
St. John’s will be looking to get back on track, however, to do so, the Red Storm will need to figure out some issues on the defensive end as in their last 4 losses, St. John’s is allowing their opponents to average 78.8 ppg. Xavier had no trouble putting up points in an 84-73 victory at St. John’s just over a week ago and as I’ve liked what I’ve seen from the Musketeers in their recent victories against Villanova & Seton Hall, I’m taking Xavier to cover this small spread.
