The Wright State Raiders and the Youngstown State Penguins meet in Horizon League conference college basketball action from the Beeghly Physical Education Center on Thursday night.
The Wright State Raiders will look to find some consistency after alternating wins and losses in each of their last 5 games following a 68-64 road loss to Northern Kentucky in their last outing. Loudon Love led the Raiders with 16 points on 8 of 16 shooting with a team-high 6 rebounds while Mark Hughes added 14 points on an efficient 6 of 7 shooting with a pair of threes and 6 rebounds of his own. Cole Gentry chipped in 12 points to round out the trio of double-digit scorers for Wright State in the loss, while Alan Vest added 5 points with 6 rebounds and 3 assists as well in the defeat. Billy Wampler was held to 9 points but still leads Wright State with an average of 14.7 points per game while Gentry leads the Raiders in assists with 3.7 assists per game and Love leads the Raiders in rebounding with 8.4 rebounds per game this season. As a team, Wright State is averaging 72.4 points per game on 42.6% shooting from the field, 36% from behind the 3-point line and 72.5% from the foul line this season.
The Youngstown State Penguins will also be looking to find consistent play after alternating wins and losses in each of their last 4 games following an 82-76 win over IUPUI. Darius Quisenberry led the Penguins with 22 points on 6 of 15 shooting with 4 threes and a team-high 8 assists while Garrett Covington added 15 points on an efficient 6 of 8 shooting with a pair of threes and Michael Akuchle added 11 points on 4 of 6 shooting with 3 triples and 6 rebounds in just 17 minutes to finish off the trio of double-digit scorers for YSU in the win. Naz Bohannon added 8 points and a team-high 7 rebounds as well in the victory. Quisenberry leads Youngstown State with an average of 12.4 points and 3.4 assists per game while Olamide Pedersen leads the Penguins in rebounding with 4.5 boards per game this season. As a team, Youngstown State is averaging 76.2 points per game on 41.9% shooting from the field, 34.3% from behind the 3-point line and 69% from the foul line this season.
Wright State is 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games against a team with a losing record and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games following a loss while the over is 4-0 in their last 4 games against a team with a winning percentage below .400. Youngstown State is 2-5 ATS in their last 7 home games and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall while the over is 4-1 in their last 5 games against a team with a losing record. Wright State is 1-4 ATS in the last 5 meetings between these two teams and 3-8-1 ATS in the last 12 meetings between these two teams at Youngstown State.
I think you could make a case for Wright State here as the Raiders have stepped up their play in the last couple of outings. However, in a game between a pair of teams who are struggling with consistency, the home team getting points is usually the way to go and that’s no different for me here. The Raiders have had issues in the past against the Penguins, both overall and on the road, so I’ll take the points with Youngstown State in a game I could see coming down to the last couple of possessions.
