The Grambling State Tigers and Alcorn State Braves play Saturday at NRG Stadium in the SWAC Championship.
The Grambling State Tigers head into this game on an impressive nine-game winning streak and look for their seventh title. Jonathan Williams is completing 58.8 percent of his passes for 2,148 yards, 24 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. Williams has 10 touchdown passes in his last three games. Chad Williams and Chester Rogers have combined for 1,278 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns while Verlan Hunter has 18 receptions. The Grambling State Tigers ground game is averaging 198.6 yards per contest, and Martez Carter leads the way with 550 yards and seven touchdowns. Defensively, Grambling State is allowing 35 points and 451.9 yards per game. Guy Stallworth leads the Tigers with 56 tackles, Michael Jolivet has seven sacks and Nicholas Peoples has three interceptions.
The Alcorn State Braves look for back-to-back SWAC titles and second overall. Lenorris Footman is completing 40.9 percent of his passes for 760 yards, nine touchdowns and three interceptions. Footman has three touchdown passs in his last three games. Jordan Payne and Marquis Warford have combined for 858 receiving yards and nine touchdowns while Tollette George has 12 receptions. The Alcorn State Braves ground game is averaging 299.7 yards per contest, and Darryan Ragsdale leads the way with 956 yards and seven touchdowns. Defensively, Alcorn State is allowing 21.1 points and 270.2 yards per game. Darien Anderson leads the Braves with 70 tackles, Darien Moody has 6.5 sacks and Eric Foster has four interceptions.
Alcorn State was just in this position last season, is better defensively and does a great job of playing its style of football with an unstoppable ground attack. Grambling State is the more balanced team offensively, but I don't trust the Tigers defense in this matchup.
I like Alcorn to repeat as SWAC champs.
