The Southern Miss Golden Eagles and the Appalachian State Mountaineers meet in college football action from Kidd Brewer Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Southern Miss Golden Eagles will look to bounce back from their first loss of the season coming in a 21-20 loss to Louisiana-Monroe in their last outing. Jack Abraham threw for 378 yards, 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions on 31 of 46 passing, while Tez Parks led USM with 42 rushing yards on 17 carries. Jaylond Adams logged 158 receiving yards and a touchdown on 9 catches while Quez Watkins logged a team-high 11 catches for 81 yards and a touchdown. Ky’el Hemby logged an interception while Jeremy Sangster logged a team-high 5 tackles on the defensive end in the losing effort.
The Appalachian State Mountaineers will be looking to build on their first win of the season in the form of a 45-9 win over Charlotte in their last outing. Zac Thomas went a perfect 14 of 14 passing with 295 yards and 3 touchdowns while Jalin Moore recorded a team-high 38 rushing yards on 11 carries. Thomas also added a rushing score to his tally while Corey Sutton recorded 3 receptions for 155 yards and 2 touchdowns. Malik Williams and Henry Pearson each had 3 receptions while Dominique Heath added a TD grab of his own in the win. The Mountaineers’ D recorded 2 sacks, an interceptions and a fumble recovery while Akeem Davis-Gaither recorded a team-high 4 tackles in the win.
Southern Miss is 10-3-1 ATS in their last 14 games in September and 3-8 ATS in their last 11 games following an ATS loss while the over is 5-1 in their last 6 games overall. Appalachian State is 6-0 ATS in their last 6 games overall and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 non-conference games while the over is 5-2 in their last 7 home games.
As much as I would want to take the points with Southern Miss here, the fact is that the Golden Eagles burned me in their last outing against a subpar Louisiana-Monroe team. Appalachian State has been money ATS dating back to last season, especially at home, and have to be riding the momentum from their close call against Penn State and their blowout win over Charlotte, so I’ll lay the points with the Mountaineers in this one.
