The Arizona State Sun Devils and the UCLA Bruins face off on Thursday in a mid-week Pac-12 college football matchup at Sun Devil Stadium.
The Arizona State Sun Devils are of to a 3-0 start and they return home after two road wins, at New Mexico and at Colorado. The big news for Todd Graham’s ASU team is that starting QB Taylor Kelly is out for this one but the blow was softened at least a little as the Sun Devils were off last week and it gave his replacement, Mike Bercovici, and extra week to practice with the first team as he looked unprepared against Colorado when he was called into action. Bercovici will likely lean on the running game as D.J. Foster has already gained 512 yards and has five touchdowns through three games and he also has 11 receptions and another TD through the air. Jaleen Strong is the Sun Devils leading receiver with 19 catches and two touchdowns. Defensively Arizona State has two interceptions, four fumble recoveries, and six sacks and hey will need to continue to remain strong in those areas to have a chance here. Damarious Randle has 27 tackles, Jordan Simone has 23 tackles, and Salamo Fiso and Antonio Longino each have 18 tackles. Arizona State is looking to take their program to the next level and to do that a win here is imperative.
The UCLA Bruins hit this game unbeaten at 3-0 and are coming off of a bye week as well as they play their first Pac-12 conference game of the year. The Bruins suffered a tough blow last timeout at Texas when QB Brett Hundley went down and Jerry Neuheisal was forced to replace him but al signs point to Hundley being ready to go for this one. Paul Perkins has been carrying the heavy load in the backfield averaging 4.8 yards per carry and he also has nine receptions. Jordan Payton is UCLA’s leading receiver followed by Devin Fuller but the Bruins have just five touchdowns through the air this season. UCLA’s defense has two interceptions, a fumble recovery, and three sacks while UCLA QB’s have been sacked 12 times. Myles Jack is second on the UCLA defense with 26 tackles but he is the one all offenses have their eyes on as one of the top overall players in the country but Eric Kendricks has 37 tackles and an interception and Eddie Vanderdoes has three tackles for a loss. UCLA hasn’t blown anyone out but they have played a reasonably tough schedule and their record remains untarnished.
Arizona State is 1-4 against the spread in their last five games, 4-0 against the spread following a bye week, and 0-4 against the spread following a game they allowed over 200 yards rushing. UCLA is 3-7 against the spread following a bye week, 6-2 against the spread against a team with a winning home record, and 4-10 against the spread after allowing more than 20 points in their previous game. UCLA is 8-3 against the spread in their last 11 games against ASU.
The total in this game is set at 59.5 and that jsut looks way too high considering both QB situations so my free pick is the under. My stronger pick is on who will cover the spread and I will post that in the Premium Area as well as on the App.
