The California Golden Bears will travel to Arizona Stadium to take on the Arizona Wildcats this Saturday night in College Football action.

The California Golden Bears suffered their 1st loss of the season and dropped to 3-1 (0-1 Pac-12) on the season after being defeated by the 19th ranked Oregon Ducks, 42-24, this past Saturday. California didn’t have many answers for the high-flying Oregon offense and couldn’t fight back a Cyrus Habbibi-Likio 1-yd TD run gave the Ducks a 35-10 lead with 13:29 left in the 3rd quarter. Oregon outgained California by a 485-427 margin and won the turnover battle by a 5-1 margin. Leading the way for the Golden Bears was RB Brandon McIIwain who had 123 rushing yards and a TD on 15 carries. On the season, California is averaging 28.5 ppg on 393.5 total yards per game (198.3 passing yds/g; 195.3 rushing yds/g). Offensively, California has been led by the RB duo of Brandon McIIwain (9.5 att/g; 63.0 yds/g; 2 TD) and Patrick Laird (17.0 att/g; 59.8 yds/g; 2 TD). QB Chase Garbers has completed 65.3% of his passes for 6 TD & 4 INT while averaging 124.5 passing yds/g. The top receivers for Garbers and the Golden Bears have been Kanawai Noa (4.7 rec/g; 51.3 yds/g; TD), Vic Wharton III (4.3 rec/g; 36.0 yds/g), and Jordan Duncan (2.8 rec/g; 33.8 yds/g; 3 TD). Defensively, California is allowing their opponents to average 25.0 ppg on 348.0 total yards per game (184.3 yds/g; 163.8 rushing yds/g).

The Arizona Wildcats fell to 2-3 (1-1 Pac-12) on the season after being defeated by the USC Trojans, 24-20, this past Saturday. Arizona fought back from a 24-0 deficit to make a 24-20 game with just 1:40 left in regulation, however, couldn’t recover the onside kick and USC was able to hang on by just running out the clock. Arizona was outgained by USC by a 450-330 margin however, did win the turnover battle by a 3-1 margin. On the season, Arizona is averaging 31.6 ppg on 481.4 total yards per game (264.0 passing yds/g; 217.4 rushing yds/g). Offensively, Arizona has been led by QB Khalil Tate who has completed 53.0% of his passes for 10 TD & 3 INT while averaging 254.2 passing yds/g. The leading receivers for the Tate and the Wildcats have been Shawn Poindexter (3.6 rec/g; 78.2 yds/g; 2 TD), Shun Brown (4.6 rec/g; 60.8 yds/g; 3 TD), and Tony Ellison (2.8 rec/g; 54.0 yds/g; 2 TD). Leading the way for the Wildcats backfield has been the duo of J.J. Taylor (17.8 att/g; 105.4 yds/g; 3 TD) and Gary Brightwell (9.6 att/g; 55.4 yds/g; 2 TD). Defensively, Arizona is allowing their opponents to average 28.4 ppg on 418.8 total yards per game (214.2 passing yds/g; 204.6 rushing yds/g).

The Golden Bears are 4-0 ATS vs. a team with a losing record and 5-2 ATS in their last 7 conference games. The Wildcats are 6-13 ATS in their last 19 conference games and 1-4 ATS vs. a team with a winning record.

California has to be disappointed with their recent performance although they seemed to be able to move the ball and put up points agianst the Ducks, they just couldn’t overcome all the turnovers. Arizona showed some life in the 2nd half after they looked like they were going to get run out of their own stadium by USC, however, it’s been a disappointing start to the Kevin Sumlin era for the Wildcats as they’ve struggled on the defensive end. I’m still puzzled by the Wildcats not using Tate more as a running QB after what he showed us last season and between the fact that California already has a nice road win at BYU and that they just look like the better football team on both sides of the ball, I’m taking California and the points.
