The Arkansas State Red Wolves and the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs face off on Saturday Night in the New Orleans Bowl.
The Arkansas State Red Wolves finished the regular season at 9-3 winning their last eight games. Arkansas State had a tough start to the season scheduling fairly big but got it going once they hit conference play. The Arkansas State offense is averaging 41 points and 448.9 yards per game and they have turned the ball over 23 times. ASU QB Fredi Knighten has completed 54.7 percent of his passes with 19 touchdowns and seven interceptions and he has rushed for 353 yards and four touchdowns. Michael Gordon leads the Red Wolves rushing attack with 1,070 yards and nine touchdowns and J.D. McKissic is the top receiver with 49 receptions though Tres Houston leads in receiving yards with 568 and touchdowns with 10. The Arkansas State defense is allowing 28.8 points and 398.6 yards per game with 26 interceptions, eight fumble recoveries, and 30 sacks. Khari Lane is ASU’s top tackler with 74, Xavier Luster-Woodson has 65 tackles, and Cody Brown has 57 tackles. Arkansas State’s wins came against fairly light competition.
The Louisiana Tech Bulldogs finished the season at 8-4 but all of the losses were to fairly tough competition. Louisiana Tech is averaging 36.8 points and 465.8 yards per game with 21 turnovers. La. Tech QB Jeff Driskel has completed 61.8 percent of his passes with 24 touchdowns and eight interceptions and he has rushed for 307 yards and five touchdowns. Kenneth Dixon leads the Bulldogs rushing attack with 968 yards and 17 touchdowns and Trent Taylor is the top receiver with 89 catches and eight touchdowns. The Louisiana Tech defense is allowing 26.8 points and 380.6 yards per game with 11 interceptions, eight fumble recoveries, and 23 sacks. Beau Fitte leads La. Tech with 97 tackles, Nick Thomason has 76 tackles, and Kentrell Brice has 56 tackles. Louisiana Tech is coming off of a 34-point blowout loss to Southern Miss.
Arkansas State is 4-0 against the spread in their last four games, 4-1 against the spread following a game that they covered the point spread, and 15-5-1 against the spread against a team with a winning record. Louisiana Tech is 4-0 against the spread against the Sun Belt, 5-1 against the spread in their last six non-conference games, and 6-2 against the spread following a game that they didn’t cover the point spread.
The total looks like it is a ton of points and while it is a lean at best I will take the over as I see both teams’ offenses being the better units.
