The Army Black Knights take the field with the Houston Cougars in the Armed Forces Bowl.
The Houston Cougars need a change in momentum as the team heads to the Armed Forces Bowl with losses in three of four to end the regular season. Houston was 8-4 with the #6 offense racking up 528 yards and over 46 points per game behind top 20 rushing and passing attacks.
The Cougars weren’t quite as fearsome on the defensive side of the football with 489 yards and 34 points allowed. UH was near the bottom of the rankings against the pass with 291 yards allowed while opposing rushing attacks averaged over 197 yards.
D’Eriq King dominated opposing secondary’s with 63.5% completion rate an 2,892 yards with and impressive 36 touchdowns and only six interceptions. Marquez Stevenson was easily the top Houston receiver with 67 receptions for 947 yards while Keith Corbin and Courtney Lark combining 1,178 yards on 71 receptions.
The Cougars were a two headed monster on the ground with Patrick Carr leading the way with 816 yards on 143 totes for 5.7 ypc while King proved to be a quality dual threat under center with 674 yards on 111 carries and a 6.1 yard average.
The Army Black Knights finished off the regular season with a 17-10 victory against Navy to cap off a stellar 10-2 record for their best performance in decades.
2018 was a typical Army offense with 376 yards and 29.7 points scored behind the nation’s second ranked rushing attack that piled up 296 yards.
The Black Knights productive ground game overshadowed what was one of the best defenses that allowed only 293.5 yards and 18 points with only 108 yards coming on the ground.
Quarterback Kelvin Hopkins Jr. gave Army completed 53.3% of his passes for 956 yards with six touchdowns and three interceptions which was quite productive for a team that seldom threw. Jordan Asberry and Kell Walker topped the Black Knights receiving corps with 20 catches and 367 yards between them while eleven players caught passes.
Darnell Woolfolk led the Army rushing attack with 885 yards on 210 carries with Hopkins Jr. logging 852 yards on 197 totes. Kell Walker added 320 yards on 67 attempts but three others gave the Black Knights between 271 yards-297 yards for great depth and production.
