The Northern Illinois Huskies look for their first win when they visit the Ball State Cardinals.
The Northern Illinois Huskies are a surprise but not in a good way following a 28-23 loss to visiting FCS squad Western Illinois to fall to 0-4. The Huskies did a little of everything in posting a 552-446 edge in yardage but much of their production came during a 16 point 4th when the score was 28-7. The NIU quarterback duo of Anthony Maddie and Ryan Graham combined to go 25-37 with 251 yards with a touchdown each with Graham tossing an interception. Kenny Golliday led the Huskies with five catches for 123 yards including a 39 yards scoring strike while Jordan Huff ran for 130 yards and 23 yards score on nine touches followed by Joel Bouagnon and another 74 yards.
A strong second half rally gave the Ball State Cardinals a 31-27 victory at Florida Atlantic and a nice 3-1 record. The Cardinals held a slight 488-445 yardage advantage and were able to both run and throw equally well. Ball State quarterback Riley Neal was Ball State’s offensive star with 252 passing yards with a pair of touchdowns and an interception on 23-37 while running for a team high 74 yards and another two trips to the endzone. Darian Green gave Ball State another 66 yards on the ground while Corey Lacanaria recorded five receptions for 62 yards including a 29 yard score followed by KeVonn Mabon caught six balls for 56 yards.
Needless to say, Northern Illinois is not accustomed to losing and they are in uncharted territory in my view which makes them dangerous. Ball State will not win their division in the MAC but they remind of an itch that can’t be scratched. I hope the Cardinals are not scratched again because I’ll back them as home dogs….
