The high powered Toledo Rockets face the Temple Owls in the Boca Raton Bowl.
The Toledo Rockets might be best known for an offense that averaged 35 points but they had plenty of stopping power with 21 points allowed. The Rockets were tough to run on with 118 yards allowed but the were a bottom third pass defense with 261 yards given up. Offensively Toledo threw for 250 yards and ran for around 215 yards so they could do everything effectively. Quarterback Phillip Ely threw for nearly 2,700 yards with 21 TD’s and ten interceptions but he was only a 55% passer. Cody Thompson, Alonzo Russell and Corey Jones were the top receiving targets with 118 catches an over 1,800 yards. Kareem Hunt and Terry Swanson were the Toledo rushing attack with a combined 1,700 yards.
The Temple Owls had a season for the record books with a 10-3 record and a trip to the CUSA title game where they lost to Houston. The Owls leaned on their #17 defense that was tough to both run and throw on and allowed 19 points. The Owls offense ranked 94th at 369 yards and were close to the bottom third nationally running and throwing yet averaged 30 points because the defense gave the offense short fields. Quarterback PJ Walker threw for over 2,700 yards with 19 scores and seven picks on 57% with Robby Anderson (64-873) and Ventell Bryant (37-521) easily the top targets. When Temple ran the ball Jahad Thomas was the first choice with 1,257 yards on 268 carries and 17 touchdowns.
