The Famous Idaho Potato Bowl pits the Western Michigan Broncos against the Brigham Young Cougars.
The Western Michigan Broncos survived the season more then anything when starting quarterback Jon Wassink went down. Western Michigan was still a quality offense that averaged nearly 450 yards and 33.2 points with the #33 rushing attack totaling 205 yards.
The Broncos allowed 378 yards and 33 points and struggled for consistency with good performances mixed with bad. Wassink completed 615% for just over 2000 yards but backup Kaleb Eleby wasn’t a complete drop connecting on almost 65% of his 11 throw for 917 yards.
Jayden Reed topped WMU with 55 catches for 792 yards and eight scores while D’Wayne Eskridge totaled 36 receptions for 715 yards and three TD’s. Levante Bellamy gave Western Michigan plenty of punch on the ground with 1,172 yards on 190 touches with grinding runner Jamauri Bogan adding 702 yards on 156 totes.
The Brigham Young Cougars were not even 100% committed to going Bowling after a 6-6 campaign but they will face Western Michigan for the first time ever in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. Brigham Young showed scoring potential down the stretch but averaged 355 yards and 25 points overall. The strength of the Cougars was a defense that was tough in all areas with only 325 yards and 21.7 points allowed.
On paper BYU quarterback’s Zach Wilson and Tanner Mangum were interchangeable with both completing passes in the 61%-62% range.
Matt Bushman topped Brigham Young with 25 receptions for 459 yards and a pair of touchdowns but ten players caught between 12-25 passes. The Cougars rushing attack was a three man game with Lopini Katoa, Squally Canada and Matt Hadley combining for just over 1,200 yards on 239 touches.
Over is 4-0 in Western Michigan Broncos last 4 games overall and over is 4-0 in Western Michigan Broncos last 4 games on fieldturf and over is 5-0-1 in Western Michigan Broncos last 6 games after accumulating less than 100 yards rushing in their previous game. BYU Cougars are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 Bowl games and BYU Cougars are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games overall and BYU Cougars are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games in December.
I’m not sure I want to get involved in this one given the number. Brigham Young wins this but I would rather tease this down to BYU -6 or 7…
