The Line: California Golden Bears -10.5 -- Over/Under:
The California Golden Bears and the Colorado Buffaloes face off on Saturday in Berkley in a Pac-12 college football battle.
The Cal Golden Bears were literally second from what appeared to be a 3-0 record when on the games’ final play Arizona tossed in a 50+ yard “Hail Mary” that turned California’s sure victory into a sobering loss. QB Jared Goff will be counted on to lead and inspire Cal as he has done thus far this season completing 65.2 percent of his passes with 10 touchdowns and two interceptions. Daniel Lasco leads the Bears in rushing averaging 6.5 yards per carry with two touchdowns and Khalfani Muhammed is averaging 4.9 yards per carry with three touchdowns. Cal likes to spread the ball around in the passing game as Bryce Teggs and Kenny Lawler each have 10 catches and that is good enough to be tied for the most receptions on the team. Cal’s defense has five interceptions, a fumble recovery, and eight sacks but the breakdown in pass overage last week must sit in their heads like a nightmare. Jalen Jefferson has 22 tackles, a sack, and an interception and Todd Barr and Brennan Scarlett have two sacks each. Cal looks to be headed in the right direction it is just a matter of mentally forgetting about last week.
The Colorado Buffaloes are 2-2 thus far this season alternating wins and losses and more importantly improving greatly fro the team we have seen in recent years. Sefo Leiufau has completed 64 percent of his passes with 10 touchdowns but he has five interceptions. Christian Powell is Colorado’s primary ground option but he has just one touchdown. CU has done a lot more through the air than on the ground and Nelson Spruce has 37 catches and seven touchdowns and Shay Fields has 27 catches. Colorado’s defense has two interceptions, two fumble recoveries and nine sacks but the level of competition is going to go up in a hurry. Tedric Thompson leads the Buffaloes with 38 tackles, Addison Gillam has 34 tackles, and Chidobe Awuzie has 24 tackles. Colorado has plenty to prove and plenty of chances ahead to prove it.
California is 8-20 against the spread in their last 28 games, 6-20 against the spread following a loss, and 2-9 against the spread in their last 11 home games. Colorado is 5-2 against the spread in their last seven games, 4-0 against the spread in their last four Pac-12 games, and 16-37 against the spread in their last 53 road games.
Both of these teams are improving but Cal is just so much ahead of Colorado and I look for them to make sure there isn’t any comeback or miracles against them this week.
