The Grambling State Tigers will open the 2015 season on the west coast with the California Golden Bears.
The offensive minded Grambling State Tigers finished 2014 at 7-5 in the SWAC which was a solid record considering the team lost their first three games and their last two. The Tigers averaged around 32 points behind the right arm of quarterback Jonathan Williams who threw for 2,454 yards and was easily the top runner with 659 yards with nobody else even approaching a four yard average. The receiving corps returns some productive targets in Chester Rogers, Chad Williams and Verlon Hunter who combined for 128 receptions and almost 1,400 yards. Expect the passing game to lead the way to any success the Tigers might have while the defense tries to figure out how to stop the opposition trough the air.
The Cal Bears finished last season at 5-7 despite averaging 38 points because opponents were lighting up the scoreboard to the tune of almost 40 points as the air was very good to them. The Bears will likely need to find the endzone as often as possible and are well suited for shootouts beginning with quarterback Jared Goff who approached 4,000 passing yards with 35 TD’s and just seven interceptions. He gets back virtually everyone that had a reception and if you were on the field the ball was coming your way at some point. The ground game returns almost everybody as well with Daniel Lasco bringing back over 1,100 yards and once again running behind a solid offensive line. If the defense improves just a little Cal will score.
The over is 5-1 in Golden Bears last 6 games in September while the Golden Bears are 4-17 ATS in their last 21 home games with the over going 20-6-1 in Golden Bears last 27 non-conference games. Cal could not stop a leak in 2014 but they could score with ant team so I give Cal the edge here. I have this at about -41 so the number looks about right so do with this as you wish…
