The Line: Charlotte 49ers -18.5 -- Over/Under:
The UMass Minutemen and Charlotte 49ers meet Saturday in college football action at McColl-Richardson Field.
The UMass Minutemen need a victory here to rebound from a poor 0-2 start to the season. The UMass Minutemen have lost six of their last seven road games. Randall West is completing 60.4 percent of his passes for 231 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. West has one touchdown pass on his last 50 pass attempts. Zak Simon and Samuel Emilus have combined for 127 receiving yards on eight catches while Brennon Dingle has five receptions. The UMass Minutemen ground game is averaging 153 yards per contest, and Bilal Ally leads the way with 155 yards and one touchdown. Defensively, UMass is allowing 46.5 points and 528 yards per game. Cole McCubrey leads the UMass Minutemen with 21 tackles, Dennis Osagiede has one sack and Isaiah Rodgers has two interceptions.
The Charlotte 49ers look for a nice win here to get a game above a .500 record. The Charlotte 49ers have won four of their last five home games. Chris Reynolds is completing 66.7 percent of his passes for 432 yards, five touchdowns and two interceptions. Reynolds has eight touchdown passes in his last five games. Micaleous Elder and Cameron Dollar have combined for 267 receiving yards and two touchdowns while Victor Tucker has seven receptions. The Charlotte 49ers ground game is averaging 276 yards per contest, and Benny LeMay leads the way with 238 yards and four touchdowns. Defensively, Charlotte is allowing 42 points and 338.5 yards per game. Jeff Gemmell leads the Charlotte 49ers with 15 tackles, Alex Highsmith has four sacks and Marquavis Gibbs has two pass deflections.
The Minutemen are 2-6 ATS in their last 8 road games, 3-8 ATS in their last 11 non-conference games and 4-9 ATS in their last 13 games overall. The 49ers are 8-3 ATS in their last 11 home games, 9-4 ATS in their last 13 games on turf and 4-12 ATS in their last 16 non-conference games. The over is 4-1 in 49ers last 5 games overall. The over is 15-6 in Minutemen last 21 games overall.
The UMass Minutemen are one of the worst defenses in the country through two games and have actually allowed 40-plus points in seven of their last 11 games overall. The Charlotte 49ers aren't much better however, as they're 118th in the country in rushing defense and have allowed 30 or more points in three of their last five games. I don't like laying big chalk in a battle between two defensive challenged teams. The Charlotte 49ers are also just 2-2 ATS as a double-digit favorite since moving to the FBS level, and one of those failed covers was an outright loss as a 11.5-point favorite. Better options on the board, but give me the points if forced to pick.
