The Line: Clemson Tigers -3 -- Over/Under: TBA
The South Carolina Gamecocks travel to Death Valley to play the Clemson Tigers on Saturday.
The South Carolina Gamecocks improved to 6-5, 3-5 SEC after beating South Alabama 37-12 last weekend. The Gamecocks have lost four of their last seven games, dropping games to Missouri, Kentucky, Auburn, and Tennessee. On the season, South Carolina is allowing a lousy 30.8 points per game, which ranks 95th in the country. South Carolina has given up 28 or more points in four of their five losses this season. This is a terrible stat considering how good the Gamecocks defense has been over the years. The South Carolina offense is averaging 34.8 points per game, which ranks a decent 32nd in the country. QB Dylan Thompson has thrown for 3,031 yards with 23 touchdowns and 11 interceptions this season. WR Pharoh Cooper has a team-high 58 catches for 921 yards and 8 touchdowns this season. RB Mike Davis has rushed for a team best 888 yards and 9 touchdowns for the Gamecocks this season. South Carolina will travel out on the road this weekend; the Gamecocks are 2-2 away from home this year.
The Clemson Tigers improved to 8-3, 6-2 ACC after knocking off Georgia State 28-0 last weekend. The Tigers have won seven of their last eight games, but they did fall to Georgia Tech two weeks ago on the road. On the season, the Clemson defense ranks 8th in the country in points allowed, giving up an average of only 17.6 points per game. Offensively, the Tigers are averaging a decent 29.6 points per game, which ranks 60th in the country. QB Cole Stoudt has thrown for 1,576 yards with 6 touchdowns and 9 interceptions. Stoudt was the back up to Deshaun Watson, but Watson has been out for the past month and is questionable for this week’s game. WR Mike Williams had 45 catches for a team-high 859 receiving yards so far this year to go along with 5 touchdown grabs. RB Wayne Gallman has a team best 523 rushing yards with 3 touchdowns this season. The Tigers will have their second chance at knocking off an SEC team this year; Clemson lost to Georgia 45-21 in their season opener on the road. Clemson will play their final home game of the season; the Tigers are a perfect 6-0 at home this season.
South Carolina has won the last five meetings with Clemson, including a 31-17 victory last year at home. The Gamecocks have not played well this year and have been one of the biggest disappointments in college football. I think Clemson will have success moving the ball on an average South Carolina defense. Meanwhile, the Gamecocks will struggle in Death Valley against a solid Tigers defense. I think Clemson finally breaks through against South Carolina and earns a win and the cover.
