The Connecticut Huskies host the Army Black Knights and their option on Saturday.
The Army Black Knights opened 2015 with a 37-35 loss to FCS Fordham in what amounted to the Rams passing versus the rushing attack of the Black Knights. The Rams won the yardage battle 445-389 with each team scoring at every opportunity. Ahmad Bradshaw was a one man show with 107 passing yards with a pair of touchdowns and an interception as Army threw more then expected with success. Bradshaw paced the Black Knights on the ground with 143 yards on 20 carries and another two scores. The issue was not moving the ball but stopping the Fordham air attack which totaled 322 yards.
The Connecticut Huskies headed in to their opener as a three point home dog to FCS Villanova which wasn’t surprising as the Wildcats are one of the best teams in their division. The Huskies might be better then we thought as they pulled off a 20-15 ‘upset’ as the defense controlled the Nova attack. Both teams finished with just over 300 yards with most of UConn’s damage coming through the air with Bryant Shirreffs throwing for 202 yards on 12-20 with a pair of scores and a pick. Tommy Myers led the Huskies with two receptions for 83 yards including a 14 yard touchdown. Connecticut received 69 yards on 23 touches from Ron Johnson and a touchdown but running the ball was not a strength.
I think Army might be throwing the ball more then expected in 2015 which is a huge departure from the norm. If you are a Black Knights fan you are probably worried about their secondary and if you follow Connecticut you are saying throw the ball. I think the Huskies do air it out and hope their defense can contain the run. I just can’t be real confident here because the Huskies have not been very good in recent years…
