The UConn Huskies will travel to Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium to take on the East Carolina Pirates this Saturday afternoon in College Football action.

The UConn Huskies dropped to 3-5 (1-4 AAC) on the season after being defeated by the UCF Knights, 24-16, this past Saturday afternoon. UConn raced out to an early 13-0 lead in this one however, was held scoreless in the 2nd half in the loss. UConn outgained UCF by a 413-400 margin however, couldn’t convert on two key 4th down plays late in the game. Leading the way for the Huskies was RB Arkeel Newsome who had 101 rushing yards and a TD. On the season, UConn is averaging 20.3 ppg on 369.5 total yards per game (238.3 passing, 131.3 rushing). Offensively, the Huskies have been led by WR Noel Thomas who has 3 TD’s and is averaging 9.5 rec/g & 115.4 yds/g. QB Bryant Shirreffs has completed 59.3% of his passes for 7 TD and 4 INT while averaging 228.8 passing yds/game. Shirreffs has also chipped in for 2 rushing TD’s and averages 35.0 rushing yds/game. The UConn backfield is led by Arkeel Newsome (13.5 att/g, 64.1 yds/g, 4 TD) and Ron Johnson (8.13 att/g, 27.3 yds/g, 4 TD). Outside of Noel Thomas, WR Hergy Mayala (2.7 rec/g, 41.8 yds/g), RB Arkeel Newsome (1.6 rec/g, 20.8 yds/g, TD), and TE Alec Bloom (1.4 rec/g, 15.3 yds/g, TD) have been the leading receivers for the Huskies. Defensively, UConn is allowing their opponents to average 25.9 ppg on 413.8 total yards per game (289.8 passing, 124.0 rushing). UConn has committed 8 turnovers on the season and has an overall turnover margin of -1.

The East Carolina Pirates lost their 5th straight game and dropped to 2-5 (0-3 AAC) on the season after being defeated by the Cincinnati Bearcats, 31-19, this past Saturday. East Carolina has trouble getting their normally strong passing game going early in this one and couldn’t fight back after falling behind by a 14-3 margin at halftime. East Carolina was outgained by Cincinnati by a 513-504 margin and lost the turnover battle by a 3-0 margin. Leading the way for the Pirates was WR Jimmy Williams who had 2 TD and 129 yards on 7 receptions. On the season, East Carolina is averaging 26.7 ppg on 513.7 total yards per game (364.4 passing, 149.3 rushing). Offensively, East Carolina has been led by the strong receiving group of Zay Jones (13.6 rec/g, 129.9 yds/g, 3 TD), Jimmy Williams (3.6 rec/g, 85.6 yds/g, 5 TD) and Quay Johnson (5.1 rec/g, 51.6 yds/g, 2 TD). QB Philip Nelson has completed 68.1% of his passes for 13 TD and 6 INT while averaging 303.4 passing yds/game. Defensively, East Carolina is allowing their opponents to average 32.4 ppg on 434.0 total yards per game (243.3 passing, 190.7 rushing). East Carolina has committed 17 turnovers on the season and has an overall turnover margin of -12.

The Huskies are 5-11 ATS in their last 16 conference games and are 4-16-3 ATS in their last 23 games vs. a team with a losing record. The Pirates are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 home games and just 3-16 ATS in their last 19 conference games.

UConn has lost 4 of their last 5 games and have continued to struggle to find ways to score the football as UConn currently ranks 122nd in scoring offense. East Carolina has the 5th ranked passing offense in the country but has been plagued by turnovers and a defense that ranks 97th in scoring defense. UConn should be able to find ways to put a few more points on the board against the Pirates defense however, the Huskie s come in with the 117th ranked passing defense, I think the Pirates will be able to have no problems putting up enough points on the board to cover this reasonable home spread. Take East Carolina to cover.
