The Ball State Cardinals travel to Rynearson Stadium in Ypsilanti, Mich. to take on the Eastern Michigan Eagles in Mid-American Conference action Saturday.
Ball State opened its Mid-America Conference (MAC) campaign with a 27-20 win on the road at Northern Illinois last week and will look to go 2-0 in MAC play for the first time since 2013 — a year that the Cardinals went 10-3 overall and 7-1 in MAC play. They are narrowly favored heading into another road contest this week taking on an Eastern Michigan team that was thumped last week 42-16 at Central Michigan.
The two teams are very similar in many ways. Neither team plays a ton of defense, with Ball State allowing 34.5 points per game (110th in FBS) and Eastern Michigan giving up a slightly better 30.3 points per game (94th in FBS). These two teams play somewhat high scoring games as Ball State loses close games and wins in blowouts and Eastern Michigan loses in blowouts and edges teams in wins.
This really is one of the toughest games of the week to pick. There really is not much between them. The total of 58 looks right on. They combine to allow 64 points per game, but also combine to average 61. The total is too close to call. Ball State is a one-point favorite and has kept their losses to a maximum of 11 points, but Eastern Michigan is at home, and has won three close games, but the two losses were blowouts.
However, Ball State has covered more than 63 percent of the as a road favorite since 2003, while Eastern Michigan has covered less than 40 percent of the time as a home underdog in the same time period. Ball State isn’t a huge favorite, but this is all that separates these two teams. Ball State minus the point is the pick.
