The Line: Utah State Aggies -6.5 -- Over/Under: 52
The Idaho Famous Potato Bowl features the Akron Zips facing the Utah State Aggies.
I thought the Akron Zips would be looking for a new head coach early on but not so much now with the team ending the regular season with four straight wins. The Zips were a defense first squad that outscored the opposition 24-21 behind the #3 run defense that gave up less then 90 yards. The Zips averaged 364 yards and were an average rushing unit at 171 yards but the offense needed every yard and first down they could muster. The Zips didn’t specialize in throwing the ball with Thomas Woodson passing for just over 2,000 yards with 16 TD’s and ten picks but was a little better then a 50% passer. Jerome Lane and Imani Davis were the top targets with 81 catches for over 1,300 yards
Another season without the services of star quarterback Chuckie Keeton and another year of success. Not many teams lose their best player to injury and still excel but the Utah State Aggies have. The Aggies limped to the finish line as losers in three of four but still secured a Bowl with a 6-6 record. With the offense averaging just under 30 points the #22 defense that allowed 337 yards and 27 points was called upon to control the scoreboard. Kent Meyers gave USU stability under center with nearly 1,500 passing yards with 14 TD’s and three interceptions with top target Hunter Sharp totaling 746 yards on 60 receptions and eight scores. Devante Mays led Utah State on the ground with 842 yards and a 5 ½ yard average but nothing the Aggies did offensively jumped off the page.
The Zips are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games after allowing less than 275 total yards in their previous game and are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games after allowing less than 100 yards rushing in their previous game while Akron are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games after allowing less than 20 points in their previous game. The over is 5-0 in Aggies last 5 games following a straight up loss and is 7-0 in Aggies last 7 games following a straight up loss of more than 20 points while the over is 5-0 in Aggies last 5 games following a ATS loss. I don’t love either team but perhaps Utah State before the line rises…
