The Western Kentucky Hilltoppers and the FIU Panthers will meet up on the college football circuit on Saturday.
The Hilltoppers opened things up this season with a 35-28 loss to the Central Arkansas Bears. Western Kentucky was in control of that one for most of the game, but allowed 21 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to seal their fate.
Steven Duncan passed for 304 yards, one TD and two picks in Western Kentucky’s opening loss, and Gaej Walker put up 152 yards with two scores on the ground. Leading the Hilltoppers receivers was Jacquez Sloan with 74 yards.
Over on the FIU side, they dropped their first game as well, though it wasn’t as close. The Panthers fell 42-14 to Tulane in Week 1, and coughed up 35 points between the second and third quarters.
FIU’s James Morgan threw for 208 yards, one TD and one pick in the Week 1 loss, and Anthony Jones led the rush on 48 yards and a score. Sterling Palmer was the top Panthers receiver with 49 yards from two catches.
The Hilltoppers are 2-5 ATS in their last seven conference games and 2-5 ATS versus a team with a losing record. Western Kentucky is 3-8 ATS in their last 11 in September and 2-6 ATS in their last eight overall.
Meanwhile, the Panthers are 4-1 ATS in their last five conference games and 4-1 ATS in their last five overall. FIU is 4-1 ATS in their last five in September and 4-1 ATS in their last five after a straight-up loss.
It goes without saying that the Hilltoppers should be sitting at 1-0 now, but thanks to that fourth-quarter breakdown they’re digging out of an early hole. Still, WKU has some solid offensive performances to build on here.
The Hilltoppers should fare better in this matchup, as they should be able to put up some points if they get rolling. I’m going Western Kentucky here.
