The SMU Mustangs head to Boca Raton, Florida on Saturday, December 21st for a game against the Florida Atlantic Owls in the Cheribundi Boca Raton Bowl. In what seems like a huge disadvantage for the Mustangs, this bowl is played in the home stadium of the FAU Owls. SMU heads into their bowl game after finishing their season with a record of 10-2 which was good enough for a 3rd place finish in the highly competitive American Conference West Division. Mustangs quarterback Shane Buechele threw for 3,626 yards and 33 touchdown passes this season while throwing 9 interceptions. Xavier Jones was SMU’s leading rusher as he carried the ball 232 times for 1,249 yards and 21 touchdowns on the year. James Proche was the leading receiver for the Mustangs as he caught 102 passes for 1,139 yards and 14 touchdowns on the season.
Since the game is being played in their home stadium, the Florida Atlantic Owls don’t even have to travel for their bowl game against the SMU Mustangs. The Owls finished the season with a record of 10-3 winning the Conference USA East Division and then beating the UAB Blazers in the conference championship game by the score of 49-6. Owls quarterback Chris Robinson threw for 3,396 yards this season while throwing 26 touchdowns against just 6 interceptions. Malcolm Davidson was the leading rusher for the Owls has he carried the ball 102 times for 711 yards and 9 touchdowns on the season. Harrison Bryant was the leading receiver for Florida Atlantic this season as he caught 65 passes for 1,004 yards and 7 touchdowns on the season.
SMU has averaged scoring 43 points per game while allowing 31.8 points per game. The Mustangs average 495.3 yards per game while allowing 438.7 yards per game. Florida Atlantic has scored 35.2 points per game while allowing 22.3 points per game. The Owls average 443 yards per game while they average allowing 370.3 yards per game. With both teams averaging over 35 points per game on offense, this game could be a shootout. The FAU defense was better than SMU’s all season, but I believe the Mustangs will make up for that in this game. It will also be interesting to see how FAU plays under a new coach after head coach Lane Kiffin left for Ole Miss after FAU’s conference championship win. I am going to go with the Mustangs in this one due to the fact that they are just a bit more explosive on offense than the Owls. SMU wins 49-45 and covers the spread.
