The Line: Georgia Bulldogs -7.5 -- Over/Under: 58
The Georgia Bulldogs and the Clemson Tigers face off on Saturday Between the Hedges in Athens as they kickoff their 2014 college football schedules.
The Georgia Bulldogs hit some bumps in the road last season and they hope to bounce back this year with a strong campaign. Hunter mason takes over at QB and he played a little less than three games after Aaron Murray was injured so he has some experience. Todd Gurley is back at RB and if he is healthy he could be the best in the nation and if Keith Marshall comes back from a torn ACL he is one of the top as well. Malcolm Mitchell also returns from injury at receiver and Chros Conley and Michael Bennett each started last season. The big question is on the O-Line where most of the starters are gone but Georgia has always had a lot of talent up front. Defensively the Dawgs were horrible last year but Jeremy Pruit comes over from the Florida State coaching staff and is the new Georgia defensive coordinator and he has 10 returning starters to work with. Georgia was decent against the run but no so good against the pass.
For the Clemson Tigers it is a season of big change with Tajh Boyd and Sammy Watkins gone but Clemson has been at or near the top of the recruiting rankings for some time and they should have plenty of talent. Cole Stoudt is the starter at QB and he should have plenty of quality to throw to including Mike Williams who looks to be a superstar. The Clemson running game took a hit with Zac Brooks getting injured in training leaving D.J. Howard, C.J. Davidson, and a lot of youth. The defensive line will be the strength of Brent Venable’s defense as Vic Beasley can get after the passer. LB Stefon Anthony had 131 tackles last season and Robert Smith is the only returning starter in the secondary.
Georgia is 10-4-1 against the spread against the ACC, 1-4-1 against the spread in their last five home games, and 1-4 against the spread in their last five conference games. Clemson is 4-1 against the spread in their last five games and 8-3 against the spread in their last 11 road games.
This one will be fun to watch but I don’t see it as a great bet as I am not liking the extra ½ point we have to lay with Georgia who is the better and more experienced team but I will do it as a free pick.
