The Line: Georgia Bulldogs -39.5 -- Over/Under:
The Georgia Bulldogs and the Troy Trojans face off on Saturday in Athens for a college football matchup between the hedges.
The Georgia Bulldogs have scheduled tough but they have a 1-1 record to show for it and may already be out of the playoff picture. Georgia got off with a win over Clemson at home but then fell to South Carolina in Columbia in a game that was typical to that series. QB Hutson Mason has been solid but he has just two TD passes as the Dawgs lean on the running game. Todd Gurley is still a leading Heisman candidate despite the loss rushing for 329 yards and four touchdowns as well as a special teams return touchdown. Michael Bennett is UGA’s leading receiver with seven catches and Chris Conley has six but the passing game will need to improve if Georgia hopes to be a National Title contender. The Georgia defense has two interceptions and a fumble recovery while sacking opposing QB’s six times. Amarlo Herrera leads the Bulldog defense with 23 tackles including three sacks, Ramik Wilson has 20 tackles, and Leonard Floyd has two sacks. Georgia wasn’t penalized much in the rankings for the loss but that have no more room for errors or losses.
The Troy Trojans are off to a miserable start to the year with three losses in as many games including a loss to FCS Abeline Christian. Troy opened with a road loss at UAB and followed that up with a 17-point home loss to Duke but losing to ACU is a tough one. QB Brandon Silvers passing numbers aren’t bad on paper completing 66.7 percent of his passes and Dontreal Pruitt completing 53.3 percent of his passes but it hasn’t been good enough. The Troy rushing attack has been led by Brandon Burks and Jordan Chun but neither of them have an average better than 3.9 yards per carry. Burks is also tied for the Trojans’ lead in receptions with 12 along with Chandler Worthy. The Troy defense has three interceptions, a fumble recovery and four sacks. Montrese Kitchens has 22 tackles and an interception, Mark Wilson has 19 tackles and a sack, and Lonnie Gosha has two sacks. Troy’s inability to stop the run has taken a team with reasonable numbers and made them winless.
Georgia is 8-3 against the spread against a team with a losing record, 3-9-1 against the spread in their last 13 games, and 1-4 against the spread against the Sun Belt. Troy is 4-0 against the spread following a game that they didn’t cover the point spread and 6-2-1 against the spread in their last nine November games.
The line in this game is simply too big. Troy’s winless record isn’t a solid indication of this team’s ability while Georgia is somewhat over rated. Roy will need to man up against the run here but even if they don’t this number is way too big.
