The Line: Georgia Southern Eagles +2 -- Over/Under:
The Western Michigan Broncos go on the road to face the option of the Georgia Southern Eagles.
The Western Michigan Broncos suffered a 37-24 defeat at the hands of visiting Michigan State as a 19 point home dog. The Broncos lost this one in the first 20 minutes with the Spartans ahead 20-7 with the lone score coming on a 100 yard kick return by Darius Phillips. MSU won the yardage battle 452-383 and were able to both run and throw while the Broncos could not run the ball at all with just over 50 yards. WMU quarterback Zach Terrell went 33-50 for a not too shabby 365 yards with a pair of touchdowns and two interceptions which was great production with a hand in his face most of the time. Cory Davis paced the Broncos receiving game with 154 yards on ten catches and a TD while Daniel Braverman snagged 13 balls for 109 yards.
The Georgia Southern Eagles have a reputation of stepping up when facing some of the bigger names although that reputation took a hit in a 44-0 defeat at West Virginia. The Mountaineers dominated play with 544 yards while the Eagles vaunted option attack was held to 244 yards. Quarterback Favian Upshaw gave GSU just 29 passing yards on 2-13 which was made even worse by four interceptions while his 64 yards rushing on 16 carries was just a four yard average. Matt Breida paced the Eagles on the ground with 70 yards on 17 carries but the run went nowhere against the Mountaineers front seven and Georgia Southern was dead meat when putting the ball in the air.
Western Michigan was handled by Michigan State in their opener which should come as no surprise but they didn’t give up and fold like a house of cards when they fell behind and did battle and covered. Georgia Southern was penciled in as a possible upset candidate versus West Virginia but seemed like a completely different team without Kevin Ellison under center. Having said that I lean Broncos here…
