The Line: Bowling Green Falcons -7.5 -- Over/Under: 64
The Georgia Southern Eagles and the Bowling Green Falcons face off on Wednesday in the GoDaddy Bowl.
The Georgia Southern Eagles finished the regular season at 8-4 losing two of their last three including a 27-point loss to Georgia State. Georgia Southern played a very soft schedule for the most part but they took the Georgia Bulldogs to overtime losing in Athens. The Georgia Southern offense is averaging 34.7 points and 417.4 yards per game and they have turned the ball over 21 times. The Eagles are a running team so QB Kevin Ellison has completed 44 percent of his passes with three touchdowns and five interceptions attempting just 84 passes all season and he has rushed for 642 yards and eight touchdowns. Matt Breida leads the Eagles in rushing with 1,540 yards and 16 touchdowns and B.J. Johnson is the top receiver with 14 catches. The Georgia Southern defense is allowing 23.3 points and 336.1 yards per game with 17 interceptions, eight fumble recoveries, and 21 sacks. Antwione Williams leads Ga Southern 97 tackles, Ironhead Gallon has 78 tackles, and Antonio Glover has 54 tackles and six interceptions. This is a big game for the Georgia Southern program and we can expect them to be motivated.
The Bowling Green Falcons are 10-3 this season and winners of the MAC Championship. Bowling Green lost head coach Dino Babers who is taking the Syracuse job but they have plenty of senior leadership on a team that has played well all season long. The Bowling Green offense is averaging 43.4 points and 561 yards per game and they have turned the ball over 13 times. BGSU QB Matt Johnson had a monster year completing 68.8 percent of his passes with 43 touchdowns and eight interceptions. Travis Greene leads the Bowling in rushing with 1,219 yards and 14 touchdowns and Gehrig Dieter leads in receptions with 89 and nine interceptions and Roger Lewis has 82 receptions and 15 touchdowns. The Bowling Green defense is allowing 26.7 points and 408.8 yards per game with 20 interceptions, seven fumble recoveries, and 30 sacks. Austin Valdez leads BGSU in tackles with 133, Trent Greene has 117 tackles, and James Sanford has 87 tackles. Bowling Green lost to three bowl teams: Tennessee, Memphis, and Toledo.
Georgia Southern is 10-2 against the spread in their last 12 non-conference games, 5-2 against the spread against a team with a winning record, and 20-8 against the spread in their last 28 games. Bowling Green is 7-1 against the spread in their last eight games, 5-1 against the spread against a team with a winning record, and 1-3-1 against the spread in their last five bowl games.
We should see plenty of fireworks in this one and expect it to go over the total and that is my free pick.
