The Line: Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets -8 -- Over/Under:
Down at Bobby Dodd Stadium at Historic Grant Field in Atlanta on Saturday, October 5, we’ve got a Week 7 intrastate college football matchup between the Georgia Southern Eagles and the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.
Georgia Southern comes into this game with a 3-2 record, dropping their last two games after starting the year 3-0. The Eagles suffered a heartbreaking 27-26 loss to Arkansas State this past week, and will be looking to right the ship. Georgia Southern scooped up five turnovers in that game, but still lost on an 8-yard TD pass with nine seconds left. Eagles QB Kevin Ellison put up a 14-of-22 line for 203 yards and a TD, while L.A. Ramsey led the rushing attack on six carries for 68 yards and a score. Myles Campbell was Georgia Southern’s leading receiver with six grabs for 98 yards and one TD.
So far this year for the Eagles, Favian Upshaw leads the way passing for a 21-of-40 mark, 409 yards and four touchdowns. Matt Breida sits atop the rushers with 70 carries for 279 yards and a score, and B.J. Johnson III leads Georgia Southern’s receiving corps with his 15 catches for 227 yards.
Moving on over to Georgia Tech, they’re entering Week 7 on a 3-3 record, winning their first three games and dropping their most recent three. The latest Yellow Jackets defeat came this past Saturday with a crushing 37-34 loss at Pittsburgh. Georgia Tech was struggling the whole game, giving up a late touchdown and a game-winning field goal as time expired. Jackets QB Justin Thomas didn’t pass much on a 7-of-10 line for 130 yards and a TD, but Clinton Lynch led a far more effective running game with four carries for 64 yards and a score. Georgia Tech WR Ricky Jeune was the top receiver with three catches for 55 yards and one TD.
On the Yellow Jackets’ season so far, Thomas is 41-of-80 for 588 yards and three scores. Dedrick Mills is tops in the Georgia Tech running game with 82 carries for 357 yards and seven scores, while Jeune is atop the receiver stats with 12 receptions for 176 yards and one TD.
Georgia Southern is 4-1 ATS in their last five games following a straight-up loss, and 11-4 ATS in their last 15 non-conference games. The Eagles are also 1-4 ATS in their last five games overall, and 15-6 ATS in their last 21 games on grass.
Meanwhile, Georgia Tech is 5-2 ATS in their last seven non-conference games, and 2-5 ATS in their last seven games in October. Georgia Tech is also 1-4 ATS in their last five home games, and 2-9 ATS versus a team with a winning record.
Georgia Tech is flailing right now, and it’s not pretty. The Yellow Jackets are desperately one-sided, with Thomas game-managing a stable of solid runners. Georgia Southern, meanwhile, is quite adept at putting up offense this year, with at least 21 points in every game, and twice hitting at least 49 on the scoreboard. The Yellow Jackets are pretty heavily favored here, but from what the Eagles have shown us so far there’s no reason to think Georgia Southern won’t cover the spread. I expect Georgia Tech to win this game, but it won’t be pretty or high-scoring.
