The Line: Houston Cougars -35 -- Over/Under:
The Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles take the field with the Houston Cougars in week one action.
The Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles finished last season at 5-7 and seemed to struggle the most against the better teams on their schedule. The numbers say the team struggled to move the chains at less then 280 yards while the defense gave up almost 450 yards and the result was opponents owned the scoreboard 30-20. Quarterback Jared Davis will look to be more of a threat in the air throwing for 770 yards with four scores and seven interceptions. Brock McCoin paced the team with 517 receiving yards but more options have to be found. Ladarius Vanlier (538) and Radir Anoor (42-224) have some explosive potential on the ground but opponents need more production from elsewhere so they don’t key on this duo.
The Houston Cougars ended last season at 8-5 with a Bowl win and former Ohio State offensive coordinator Tom Herman has even better things in sight. The Cougars won the battle on the scoreboard 30-21 with quarterback Greg Ward Jr. throwing for over 2,000 yards and adding another 700+ yards on the ground. Ward loses four of his top five receivers but Demarcus Ayers leads a slew of highly touted athletes that should catch the ball. Kenneth Farrow (186-1037) and Ryan Jackson (112-610) will give opposing run defenses plenty to worry about if some pieces are found up front. The worry is on the defensive side of the football where the front seven lost 5-6 linemen and 2-3 top linebackers.
The under is 7-1 in Cougars last 8 games in September and Houston are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games in September while the over is 4-1 in Cougars last 5 games overall. The number is huge here and I think that it’s up to Houston to cover or just get a big lead and go through the motions. I believe the Cougars will be a decent squad and Tennessee Tech has struggled against better competition and hopefully do here because I’ll lay the chalk…
