The Line: Iowa State Cyclones +3 -- Over/Under: 54
Jack Trice Stadium and the Iowa State Cyclones host instate rival the Iowa Hawkeyes.
The Iowa Hawkeyes were supposed to get a pretty good test from FCS Illinois State in their opener but it was the Redbirds who were dominated 31-14. This was 31-0 before Illinois scored a pair of meaningless touchdown’s in the 4th as their offense was limited to just 231 yards while the Hawkeyes totaled 431 yards with balance. CJ Beathard was 15-24 for2111 yards with a scoring strike to Matt VandeBerg while Jordan Canzeri led the receiving corps with four catches for 90 yards. The Hawkeyes were productive on the ground as well with LeShun Daniels Jr. ripping off 123 yards on 26 carries as the offense had just one turnover and punted twice.
Many thought the Iowa State Cyclones were a prime upset target against Northern Iowa in their opener but the Cyclones rode a 21-0 second half to a 31-7 victory at home. On paper the game was close with both teams totaling just over 300 yards with two turnovers apiece but ISU scored when the opportunity arose and added an 81 yard punt return by Trever Ryan in the closing minutes. Tyler Brown was Iowa State’s only runner of significance with 68 yards on eleven touches so the passing of Sam Richardson needed to produce. Richardson was an efficient 21-28 for 233 yards with scoring throws to Allen Lazard and Dondre Daley.
The under is 6-0 in Hawkeyes last 6 games in September and the over is 4-0-1 in Hawkeyes last 5 games following a ATS win while going 3-0-1 in Hawkeyes last 4 games following a S.U. win. The over is 4-0 in Cyclones last 4 games following a S.U. win while Iowa State are 4-0-1 ATS in their last 5 games in September and are 0-4-2 ATS in their last 6 home games vs. a team with a winning road record. The under is 8-2 in the last 10 meetings while Iowa are 4-11 ATS in their last 15 meetings with the underdog going 8-3 ATS in their last 11 meetings. Iowa State has generally had the upper hand in this series but I believe the Hawkeyes can win this although I would hesitate to lay more then a field goal…
