|Date & Time||Saturday September 3, 2016, 3:30 PM (EDT)|
The Line: Iowa Hawkeyes -27.5 -- Over/Under: 51.5
The Miami of Ohio Redhawks and Iowa Hawkeyes open the 2016 season Saturday at Kinnick Stadium on ESPNU.
The Miami of Ohio Redhawks have nowhere to go but up after winning just five games to last two years. Billy Bahl returns at quarterback after throwing for 1,400 yards and eight touchdowns. Rokeem Williams and Sam Martin return at wide receiver after combining for more than 1,000 yards and four touchdowns while Jared Murphy had 29 receptions. The Miami of Ohio Redhawks ground game averaged 129 yards per contest last season and Alonzo Smith returns after racking up 498 yards and five touchdowns. Defensively, Miami of Ohio allowed 32 points and 404 yards per game. Paul Moses returns after 71 tackles, JT Jones had nine sacks and Tony Reid had one interception.
The Iowa Hawkeyes hope to build on their incredible 12-2 season last year that resulted in a Rose Bowl berth. C.J. Beathard returns at quarterback after throwing for 2,800 yards and 17 touchdowns. Matt VandeBerg and George Kittle return at wide receiver after combining for more than 900 yards and 10 touchdowns while Jerminic Smith had six receptions. The Iowa Hawkeyes ground game averaged 181 yards per contest last season and LeShun Daniels, Jr. returns after racking up 646 yards and eight touchdowns. Defensively, Iowa allowed 20.4 points and 341 yards per game. Josey Jewell returns after 126 tackles, Jaleel Johnson had 3.5 sacks and Desmond King had eight interceptions.
The Redhawks are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 vs. Big Ten and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall. The Hawkeyes are 0-5-1 ATS in their last 6 home games and 1-3-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall.
The RedHawks have some key players returning and should be able to put some positive things together after this game. As for this game, Iowa is going to beat the hell out of the Redhawks. The Hawkeyes will once again have an elite defense and should be better offensively with another season of Beathard leading the way.
I don't like big numbers, especially in week 1, but the talent gap is quite large here.
