The Line: Kansas Jayhawks -5 -- Over/Under:
The Kansas Jayhawks open the season with the upset minded South Dakota State Jackrabbits.
The South Dakota State Jackrabbits have become a consistent visitor to the FCS playoffs with five consecutive visits but plenty of talent was lost to graduation and needs to be addressed heading in to 2015. SDSU outscored the opposition 32-25 but many of their losses were at skill positions so scoring will be effected which means the defensive side of the football might have to lead the way. Backup quarterback Zach Lujan threw for over 1,900 yards but starter Austin Sumner still threw for over 1,600 yards and almost 3,000 yards when he was healthy in 2013. The ground game also loses Zach Zenner and his 2,019 yards which leaves Brady Mengarelli with 332 yards as the top rusher. Jake Weineke led the receiving corps with 1,404 yards on 73 catches but he will need help.
The Kansas Jayhawks will be out to improve on their 3-9 performance of a season ago where they were outscored 33-18. The offense took a hit when quarterback Michael Cummings injure his knee in the spring which likely leaves Montell Cozart and his 700 passing yards as the probable starter. The news is worse with the Jayhawks graduating their top six receivers. Top runner Corey Avery and his 600+ yards are also gone which leaves DeAndre Mann (86-399) as the top returning running back. The offensive line loses three starters but has six back with experience. The success of KU will hinge on whether the defense can step up and carry the load but this side of the ball loses talent everywhere with the linebacking unit getting wiped clean.
The over is 4-0 in Jackrabbits last 4 non-conference games and is 4-0 in Jackrabbits last 4 games on fieldturf while going 4-1 in Jackrabbits last 5 games overall. The Jayhawks are 1-8-1 ATS in their last 10 non-conference games and are 1-6-1 ATS in their last 8 games in September while the under is 5-1 in Jayhawks last 6 games in September. I think many people will see a small spread and automatically side with Kansas but at the very least these programs are on par with one another so I’ll take the points with a team that could win…
