The Akron Zips begin conference play at the Kent State Golden Flashes in week five.
The Akron Zips fell behind Appalachian State early and ran out of clock in a 45-38 defeat where they trailed 31-14 at the break. The reality of the Zips plight was 486 yards and a pair of turnovers couldn’t overcome the Mountaineers 587 yards. The pass heavy Zips ran well when they did run with Van Edwards Jr. totaling 89 yards on seven touches including a six yard scoring run. Akron quarterback Thomas Woodson had success in the air, completing 31-43 for 353 yards with three touchdowns and a pair of interceptions. Jerome Lane paced the Zips receiving corps with 134 yards and a TD on nine catches while Jojo Natson posted ten receptions for 87 yards and a score.
The Kent State Golden Flashes ran in to a buzz saw in top ranked Alabama and the 48-0 score was almost predictable. The Crimson Tide led 41-0 after 30 minutes but called off the wolves in the second half. The Golden Flashes were outgained 502-166 and gave up a 75 yard punt return. Kent State just couldn’t do anything consistently on offense with Justin Rankin their best option with 52 rushing yards on six carries. Kent quarterback George Bollas connected on 4-8 for 71 yards with Will Matthews posting 43 yards on a pair of receptions. The bottom line was the Golden Flashes couldn’t move the chains and the Crimson Tide did.
I know Kent State will try to control the scoreboard here as they must avoid a shootout at all cost because scoring points has not been their specialty for as long as I can remember. Akron is a bit of a mystery to me at times as I sometimes have trouble figuring out what to expect from week to week. If the Zips offense comes to play they are the choice…
