The Line: Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns +10 -- Over/Under:
The Appalachian State Mountaineers visit the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns Wednesday.
The Appalachian State Mountaineers were the favorite to win the Sun Belt but they are not looking as strong as I thought at times. A 17-3 win versus Georgia State as a 19 point home favorite tells me the offense needs work after getting shutout in the first half. ASU outgained the Panthers 361-261 and and intercepted four passes so 17 points seems very little to put on the scoreboard. Mountaineers quarterback Taylor Lamb wasn’t sharp on 13-25 for 143 yards and a touchdown and interception with Shaedon Meadows catching three passes for 43 yards including TD with 3:16 left to provide some breathing room. Jalin Moore led the Mountaineers on the ground with 159 yards on 28 carries and a 45 yard scoring jaunt.
The Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns were a dark horse in the Sun Belt but after a 37-31, overtime loss at New Mexico State as a 5.5 point favorite so I’m not sure who has the best team in the conference. The Aggies won the battle for yardage 473-432 with both teams losing fumbles in the endzone. UL Lafayette quarterback Anthony Jennings connected on 12-22 and a touchdown and two interceptions including a pick six while Jalen Nixon threw for 86 yards before going down with a broken ankle. Darius Hoggins and Nixon combined for 139 rushing yards on 24 carries to lead UL Lafayette on the ground while Al Riles was the top receiving option with eight receptions for 110 yards.
The under is 4-0 in Appalachian State last 4 games following a bye week and the over is 5-0 in Mountaineers last 5 games following a ATS loss while Appalachian State are 0-7 ATS in their last 7 games following a straight up win. The under is 3-0-1 in UL Lafayette last 4 conference games and4-0-1 in UL Lafayette last 5 home games vs. a team with a winning road record while the over is 3-0-1 in UL Lafayette last 4 games in October.
I don’t think the Mountaineers are living up to expectations but with Marcus Cox out there is a huge void on the ground. If he plays I think the Mountaineers cover easily but they should cover anyway…
