Cajun Field, Lafayette, LA
2351 W Congress St, Lafayette, LA
Appalachian State -2; total 68.5
Appalachian State travels to Louisiana-Lafayette (App State -2; 68.5) to take on the Ragin’ Cajuns in Sun Belt Conference action.
A replay of last year’s Sun Belt Conference title game (won by Appalachian State 30-19) and a very possible preview of the 2019 title matchup, the Mountaineers will look to win its seventh game in a row against the Ragin’ Cajuns in as many attempts. But if Louisiana has ever had a chance to knock of the Mountaineers, this is the year. After a narrow 10-point loss to Mississippi State at Mercedes-Benz Superdome, Louisiana has four straight wins this season scoring more than 35 points in each of those wins, including a 77-6 pounding of Texas Southern.
In addition, this game is in Lafayette at Cajun Field on a short week, so if anything can happen, this would be the week.
These are two of the most prolific offenses in all of the FBS. Appalachian State is currently seventh in scoring offense at 47 points per game, while Louisiana is ninth at 44.8 points per game. Louisiana is a respectable 41st in scoring defense in the FBS allowing 21.4 points per game, but that number is pushed to more than 25 points per game if the Texas Southern game is thrown out. In addition, Appalachian State currently ranks just 81th in FBS allowing 29 points per game.
Amazingly, Louisiana is the only team remaining in FBS to cover the spread 100 percent of the time, but the Mountaineers are just behind the Ragin’ Cajuns failing to cover just once this season. The more interesting stat, however, is that the two teams combine to go 7-2 over the total this season, and Appalachian State covers by more than 20 points per game.
The total is crazy at 68.5, but it is the only pick. These are two high-powered, high-scoring offenses with average-at-best defenses. There will be points galore scored. Picking a winner against the spread is going to be too tough to call, especially considering that this game will be played in Lafayette, so take the over, watch the game, and cheer for lots and lots of scoring.
