The Florida International Golden Panthers will travel to Joe Aillet Stadium to take on the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs this Saturday afternoon in College Football action.
The Florida International Golden Panthers used a strong defensive effort in the second half to defeat the NC Central Eagles 39-34 this past Saturday and improve to 2-1 (0-0 C-USA). FIU outgained the Eagles by a 490-209 margin and forced NC Central into committing 3 TO’s in the contest. FIU dominated the time of possession in the contest holding the ball for 17 minutes longer the Eagles. The Panthers got a strong offensive performance from quarterback Alex McGough who completed 22 of 36 passes for 242 yards, 3 TD’s and 1 INT. FIU was able to average 5.4 yards/rush and was led by Alex Gardner who had 81 yards on 20 carries. Leading the way for the receivers were Dennis Turner (2 rec, 72 yards) and Ya’Keem Griner (5 rec, 55 yards). The Panthers defense held the Eagles to just 1.7 yards/rush and forced NC Center to be just 1 for 12 on third down. The Panthers are holding their opponents to just 21.33 ppg this season and is averaging 25.33 ppg on 429 yards/game.
The Louisiana Tech Bulldogs lost another close game and fell to 1-2 (0-1 C-USA) on the season after losing 39-33 to the Kansas State Wildcats in triple OT. The Bulldogs stayed closed with Kansas State throughout the contest and although Jonathan Barnes was able to hit a 45 yard FG to send it into OT, they allowed the Wildcats to score a TD on a third and 16 in triple OT and couldn’t answer with a TD of their own. The Bulldogs were able to outgain the Wildcats by a 451-355 margin but lost the turnover battle by a 2-1 margin. The Bulldogs aired out in the contest as the former Florida Gator QB Jeff Driskel completed 30 of 51 pass attempts for 314 yards and a TD. Trent Taylor was targeted often by Driskel and finished the game with 12 receptions for 148 yards and a TD. Kenneth Dixon led the rushing attack and had 81 yards on 17 carries. The Bulldogs are averaging 44.3 ppg on 539.3 yards per game however, will need to continue to look for some answers on the defense end as they are allowing 31.7 ppg.
The Golden Panthers are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games following a SU win of more than 20 points and 4-1 ATS vs. a team with a losing record. The Bulldogs are 6-0 AS in their last 6 games following a S.U. loss and 4-0 ATS in their last 4 home games.
Florida International picked up a solid upset win to open their season against UCF and although they hung tough with Indiana Hoosiers in their second contest they start are relying on a young offensive that is having trouble putting up points. Louisiana Tech might be 1-2 on the season but they could easily been 3-0 and can’t hang their heads losing to C-USA favorite Western Kentucky and the Big-12 Kentucky Wildcats. This game will really come down to whether the FIU defense can contain the Louisiana Tech offensive, and although FIU looks as they are continuing to improve under Ron Turner, I think Louisiana Tech will be able to have success against the Panthers defense at home and cover this spread. Take the Bulldogs to cover!
