The Liberty Flames and the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns will meet up for Week 2 college football action on Saturday.
Liberty comes into this one at 0-1 on the young season, falling to Syracuse 24-0 in the opener. The Flames didn’t let the Orange score more than seven points in any quarter, however.
In the Week 1 loss, Stephen Calvert gave Liberty 234 yards and two interceptions, while Frankie Hickson led an anemic rush on 29 yards. Antonio Gandy-Golden put up 119 yards on six receptions to lead the way there.
Over on the Louisiana side, they fell to the Mississippi State Bulldogs in their opener 38-28. Despite scoring 14 points in the fourth quarter, the Cajuns rally came too late and they couldn’t close the gap.
Lousiana’s Levi Lewis posted 267 yards, one TD and one INT in the Week 1 loss, and Raymond Calais had 80 yards rushing. Leading the Cajuns receivers was Jamal Bell with 113 yards on eight grabs.
The Flames are 17-5 ATS in their last 22 non-conference games and 3-1-1 ATS in their last five after an ATS loss. Liberty is 3-1-1 ATS in their last five after a straight-up loss and 14-5 ATS in their last 19 road games.
Meanwhile, the Cajuns are 4-1 ATS in the last five after a straight-up loss and 9-3 ATS in their last 12 overall. Louisiana is 2-6 ATS in their last eight games in September and 4-9 ATS in their last 13 home games versus a team with a losing road record.
Considering Syracuse is a nationally-ranked powerhouse, Liberty played admirably in the Week 1 opener. It would have been nice to see them get into the end zone, but some of the offensive performances were promising.
As for the Cajuns, I expected them to play better in the opener, but a few key mistakes led to a 10-point defeat. I like Louisiana to manage a victory here, but I think Liberty can eke into a cover.
