The Line: LSU Tigers -31 -- Over/Under:
The LSU Tigers and the Louisiana Monroe Warhawks face off on Saturday in Baton Rouge in a regional college football matchup.
The LSU Tigers followed up their huge opening week win over Wisconsin with a layup win over Sam Houston State in week two but regardless of who they play LSU looks to be as tough as ever. Les Miles teams are rarely perfect but they always seem to have enough talent to compete with anyone and this year appears to be no different. Anthony Jennings is the starter at QB but with his completion percentage below 50 percent we may see more of Brandon Harris who has completed four of his five passes. For now Kenny Hilliard and Leonard Fournette are sharing carries but most believe it will eventually be Fournette, the super freshman, who carries the load. The LSU receivers haven’t been called on much but four of Travin Dural’s catches have gone for touchdowns and John Doarse is second on LSU with four receptions. The LSU defense is once again tough with four interceptions, a fumble recovery, and seven sacks. Danielle Hunter has 14 tackles to lead the LSU defense and Sione Teuhema has two sacks. LSU is going to contend in the SEC but will QB play bring them down once again.
The Louisiana Monroe Warhawks have opened the season with two wins but now they face their first of three consecutive SC opponents. While a win is a win in college football, it is tough to say Wake Forest and Idaho are able to pose the same kinds of challenges LSU presents. ULM QB Pete Thomas has completed over 55 percent of his passes throwing for two touchdowns and running for another. Centarius Donald carries the load in the ULM backfield averaging five yards per carry and scoring three touchdowns also catching six passes while Kenzee Jackson is the Warhawks leading receiver with 12 catches and Ajalen Holley has eight receptions. The Louisiana Monroe defense has three interceptions and a fumble recovery while sacking opposing QB’s 10 times through their first two games. Justin Backus leads ULM with 15 tackles while Ray Stovall has 12 tackles including 2.5 sacks and Lenzy Pipkins has two sacks. ULM will face a much stiffer test here but stopping the run will be a bigger priority than rushing the passer.
LSU is 1-4 against the spread following a win, 1-5 against the spread following a win by 20 or more points, and 1-7 against the spread after allowing less than 20 points in their previous game. Louisiana Monroe is 4-1 against the spread in their last five road games against a team with a winning home record, 2-5 against the spread in their last seven non-conference games, and 11-4 against the spread in their last 15 road games.
This is a ton of points and ULM has allowed just 115 yards on the ground this season. I look for the Warhawks to at least pose enough of a challenge to cover the big number.
