The LSU Tigers and the Southern Miss Golden Eagles face off on Saturday in Baton Rouge in a week 7 college football match up.
The LSU Tigers are 3-2 this season and are coming off of an unplanned bye week after their game against Florida was cancelled. LSU is is still in search of a head coach but Ed Orgeron had the team ready to roll last time out as they blasted Missouri 42-7. The LSU offense is averaging 25.2 points and 398.4 yards per game and hey have turned the ball over 7 times. LSU QB Danny Etling has completed 58.4 percent of his passes with 3 touchdowns and an interception and he has also rushed for a touchdown. Derrius Guice is LSU’s top rusher with 402 yards and 4 touchdowns and Leonard Fournette is listed as doubtful while Travin Dural has 18 catches and a touchdown and Malachi Dupre has 15 catches. The Tigers defense is allowing 14.8 points and 326 yards per game with 4 interceptions, 3 fumble recoveries, and 16 sacks. Kendell Beckwith is LSU’s top tackler with 45, Jamal Adams has 34 tackles, and Arden Key has 7 sacks. LSU is hoping to run off a string of wins to salvage their season.
The Southern Miss Golden Eagles are 4-2 this season and they are coming off of a horrible one-sided loss to UTSA. The Southern Miss offense is averaging 40.2 points and 532.2 yards per game and they have turned the ball over 15 times. Southern Miss QB Nick Mullens has completed 58.6 percent of his passes with 16 touchdowns and 8 interceptions. Running back Ito Smith is the top option in the Golden Eagles backfield with 711 yards and 6 touchdowns and D.J. Thompson has 25 catches and 4 touchdowns and Allenzae Staggers has 23 catches and 5 touchdowns. Defensively Southern Miss is allowing 27 points and 315.8 yards per game with 4 interceptions, 3 fumble recoveries, and 19 sacks. Dylan Bradley leads Southern Miss with 39 tackles and 5 sacks, D’Nerius Antoine has 36 tackles, and LaDarius Harris has 23 tackles. Southern Miss can only hope they were caught looking ahead to this game because if they really are as bad as they looked last week they could be in big trouble here.
LSU is 5-2 against the spread against Conference USA, 1-4 against the spread in their last 5 games, and 2-5 against the spread in their last 7 non-conference games. Southern Miss is 4-1 against the spread against the SEC, 4-1 against the spread following a loss, and 1-5 against the spread against a team with a winning record.
This is just a ton of points and Southern Miss is a lot better than what they are getting credit for by the odds makers. Southern Miss can get after the passer and if they can get some solid tackling of the running backs they can keep it close.
