The Ball State Cardinals hope to get a win in their first ever meeting with the Massachusetts Minutemen.
The Ball State Cardinals had a chance to stay in the running for the postseason with a victory over visiting Northern Illinois in week eleven. However those hopes and a shot at a three game winning streak went out the window in a 35-21 loss to the Huskies. The Cardinals hung tough in the first half with a 14-14 tie heading in to the break but NIU took advantage of mistakes to win with a 21-7 second half run. The Huskies totaled 385 yards which Ball State countering with 307 yards but five turnovers did them in. Jack Milas really struggled in the air by hitting 16-39 for 174 yards with a touchdown and three interceptions while Jahwan Edwards ran for 92 yards on 21 touches with a trip to the endzone.
The Massachusetts Minutemen have had an extra week to correct the mistakes they made in a 42-35 loss at Toledo in week ten. The Minutemen look to get a win versus Ball State behind their high scoring offense which piled up 497 yards against the Rockets behind an explosive passing attack. UMass had nothing going for them on the ground which meant the pressure was on Blake Frohnapfel which turned out to be a solid option. Frohnapfel completed 28-55 for 438 yards for five touchdowns and a pair of interceptions. Jean Sifrin led the Minutemen with six catches for 186 yards including a 76 yarder. The problem was on the defensive side of the ball with the Rockets able to run and throw their way to 520 yards.
The Cardinals are 6-0 ATS in their last 6 road games vs. a team with a losing home record and are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games following a double-digit loss at home while going 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games after allowing less than 170 yards passing in their previous game. For Massachusetts the over is 5-0 in Minutemen last 5 games after accumulating less than 100 yards rushing in their previous game and 5-0 ATS vs. a team with a losing record while the Minutemen are 7-0 ATS in their last 7 games on fieldturf. I like Ball State but I like what I have seen from UMass more so as a home pick 'em I'll back them now...
