The Southern Illinois Salukis and the UMass Minutemen will match up in college football activity on Saturday.
The Salukis opened up with a loss to Southeast Missouri State in their Week 1 game, falling 44-26. Southern Illinois was down 20-14 at halftime but coughed up 17 unanswered points in the third.
Stone Labanowitz went 16-of-28 for 217 yards and a pick in the loss Week 1 for the Salukis, but DJ Davis had a good day on the ground with 125 yards and two scores. Nigel Kilby led the Southern Illinois receivers with 49 yards from two catches.
Over on the Minutemen’s side, they fell in their opener as well, dropping 48-21 to Rutgers. UMass was up 21-7 after the first quarter, but were outscored 31-0 in the second and didn’t find the scoreboard again.
Randall West posted 106 yards passing for the Minutemen in the opener, logging a TD and a pick as well. Bilal Ally led the UMass rush with 66 yards and a score, and Kyle Horn put up 37 yards with a receiving TD.
The over is 5-0 in the Salukis’ last five overall and 4-0 in their last four after posting less than 170 pass yards in their previous game. The over is also 4-0 in Southern Illinois’ last four after putting up less than 100 yards rushing in their previous game.
Meanwhile, the Minutemen are 0-4 ATS in their last four after allowing more than 40 points in their previous game and the over is 5-0 in their last five after giving up more than 450 total yards in their previous game. The over is also 8-1 in UMass’ last nine after allowing more than 280 pass yards in their previous game.
Southern Illinois’ tough loss in Week 1 does feature some promising takeaways, such as a decent running game and some big-play potential here and there. Still plenty of adjustments to make, however.
As for UMass, they seemed to start out well but then just fell apart from the second quarter onward in Week 1. This is something of an interesting matchup and a tough one to pin down, but I think if the Salukis can control the game early they’ve got the potential to cover.
