The SMU Mustangs are set to visit Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium in Memphis, Tennessee for an AAC clash against the Memphis Tigers. The SMU Mustangs come into his matchup with an 8-0 record, and they will be looking to continue their success after winning their recent road game against the Houston Cougars, 34-31. QB Shane Buechele had a solid game through the air as he threw for 203 yards, 2 TDs, and 1 interception. RB Xavier Jones had a big game on the ground as he ran for 133 yards and 2 TDs on 22 carries.
The SMU Mustangs struggled on the defensive side of the ball against the Houston Cougars as they allowed them to score 31 points and rack up a total of 510 yards of offense. Senior safety Rodney Clemmons led the way for the SMU defense with 8 tackles and 2 pass deflections while contributing the lone interception of the game. Senior safety Patrick Nelson had a productive game from the secondary for the Mustangs as he racked up 7 tackles, 3.5 TFL, and 2.5 sacks while forcing a fumble.
The Memphis Tigers come into this matchup with a 7-1 record, and they will be looking to continue their success after winning their recent road game against the Tulsa Golden Hurricane, 42-41. QB Brady White had an efficient game through the air as he connected on 15 of his 25 pass attempts for 277 yards and 2 TDs. RB Kenneth Gainwell had a big game on the ground for the Tigers as he ran for 149 yards and 3 TDs on 24 carries.
The Memphis Tigers struggled on the defensive side of the ball against the Tulsa Golden Hurricane as they allowed them to score 41 points and rack up a total of 584 yards of offense. Senior LB Austin Hill led the way for the Memphis defense with 13 tackles, 1 TFL, and 1 pass deflection. Senior DE Bryce Huff was able to get into the Tulsa backfield a handful of times as he contributed 6 tackles, 1.5 TFL, and 1.5 sacks.
The SMU Mustangs have gotten off to a record start as they are 8-0, and a huge reason for that is their offensive output as they rank 6th in the country in points scored. QB Shane Buechele transferred into SMU from Texas, and he has been the difference-maker for this offense as he has thrown 20 TDs compared to 7 interceptions, but he also has Xavier Jones who has 884 rushing yards and 14 TDs. The Memphis Tigers have been very good on the offensive side of the ball, but they have been fairly predictable as they will look to give the ball to RB Kenneth Gainwell and I expect SMU to key in on that portion of the offense. SMU has beaten some very good teams this season, and I expect them to pull away with a win here.
